This trek offers you pristine landscapes and stunning views. The trail passes through diverse ecosystems, including lush lowlands with terraced fields, charming villages, and alpine meadows. Unlike more commercialized routes, the Manaslu Circuit maintains its natural charm, providing a less-trodden and untouched experience for you.
The trek showcases panoramic vistas of the majestic Himalayan range, making it a unique and captivating adventure. The trek starts from the altitude of Soti Khola, which is just 710 meters, and takes you up to 5106 meters at Larke La. This allows you to experience everything from dense lowlands to alpine forests in a single trek. During the trek, the ranges of Mt. Manalsu, Himlung Peak, Cheo Himal, Kanguru, Siringi, Hiunchuli, Ngadi, Annapurna II, and others can be seen.
Rich biodiversity and wildlife encounters
The Manaslu Circuit Trek takes you through two conservation areas: Manaslu Conservation Area and Annapurna Conservation Area. This trek offers a refreshing experience, revives your senses, and provides a revitalizing energy boost. The route allows you to encounter various endangered plant and animal species within these conservation areas, making it a truly unique and memorable experience. Because of the restricted areas, you will get to explore the undisturbed biodiversity during the trek.
During the trek, you will find a diverse range of wildlife. It includes 110 species of birds, 33 mammals, 11 butterflies, and 3 species of reptiles. The trek provides opportunities to spot Himalayan thar, blue sheep, snow leopards, and musk deer. Additionally, you may have the chance to witness golden eagles, kalij, crimson horned pheasants, and Himalayan and Tibetan snow cocks. Spotting the national bird of Nepal, the Dhanfe, and grey langur monkeys resting on cliffs adds to the excitement of the trek.
The conservation areas include 19 different forest types, with pine and rhododendron being the dominant varieties. The lush landscapes showcase around 1500-2000 plant species, ranging from medicinal herbs to aromatic plants, enhancing the natural beauty of the Manaslu Circuit Trek.
Larkya La Pass
Larke La Pass is the highest point during the Manaslu Circuit Trek, which lies between the Bimthang and Dharmashala villages. You are treated to breathtaking views during the climb toward the pass. Huge snow-covered peaks surround you, which create a stunning backdrop.
Reaching Larke La Pass feels like stepping into a real paradise. The pass gives you a 360-degree view of the Himalayan ranges. You will not only see Manaslu but also the Ganesh Himal Range, Himal Chuli, Mt. Annapurna II, and more. The air up there is pure and crisp, and there is a deep silence, broken only by the occasional mountain wind.
What makes Larke La Pass truly special is the surreal view of the glacial landscapes while crossing the pass. There are blue lakes and glaciers that enhance the beauty already.
Manaslu Base Camp & Birendra Lake
Birendra Lake is a hidden gem located below the heart of the Manaslu Range. Surrounded by lush green meadows and rugged mountain slopes, the lakes are eye-catching. The crystal-clear waters of Birendra Lake perfectly mirror the pristine beauty of the snowy peaks that encircle it. The tranquility of the lake, the sounds of nature in the distance, and the peaceful surroundings make this lake worth visiting.
A short trek away from Birendra Lake is the stunning Manaslu Base Camp. On the way to the base camp, the landscape is a captivating mix of Birendra Lake and the towering Mount Manaslu. The air becomes crisp as you approach the base camp, and the snow-covered peaks of the Manaslu massif stand tall against the blue sky. Majestic peaks and glaciers surround the base camp itself, showcasing the grandeur of nature. The immensity of the mountains is awe-inspiring, providing a serene retreat from the busyness of everyday life at the peaceful base camp.
Tsum Valley Extension
Tsum Valley is a hidden gem within the Himalayas, making it an amazing side trip during the Manaslu Circuit Trek. This trek was recently opened to trekkers. This trek is known for its pristine landscapes and rich cultural heritage. You have to take an extra 5–6 days from Tsum Valley Trek.
As you explore Tsum Valley, you will come across ancient monasteries. The trail is decorated with prayer flags, showcasing centuries-old Buddhist traditions. The valley itself is picture-perfect, featuring terraced fields, stone houses, and peaceful villages. The journey to and from Tsum Valley enhances the Manaslu Circuit Trek, turning it into more than just a physical adventure. It becomes a cultural and spiritual journey with the charm and authenticity of Tsum Valley. This trek leaves a lasting impression on those who explore its hidden wonders.
Uncountable Waterfalls and Rivers
As you hike through the lower regions while you are at the starting point of the trek, the thundering waterfalls amaze you. These natural wonders enhance the overall charm of the trek. The waterfalls come in different types. Some are gentle, creating a misty atmosphere that adds a mystical touch to the surroundings. Others are more powerful, rushing over rocky mountains that show the raw force of nature.
The trail weaves through dense forests and alongside rivers, creating an ideal setting for waterfalls to form. This creates a network of streams that cascade down rocky slopes, forming beautiful waterfalls of various sizes. These waterfalls and rivers are fed by the melting snow from Mt. Manaslu, forming the Budhi Gandaki River.
The countless waterfalls can be seen and heard as you trek, especially from September to October. They not only provide a visual treat but also contribute to a refreshing atmosphere, making your trek even more enjoyable.
Exploring traditional villages and local culture
Manaslu Circuit Trek is not only rich in breathtaking nature but also shares a lot of its Tibetan culture and traditions. You will come across Buddhist monasteries that add a serene touch during the trek. You will be connected to the rich cultural and natural heritage of the Manaslu region.
The lower part is mainly inhabited by the Gurung ethnic group, while the upper part is dominated by the Bhotias and Nubri peoples. Despite the challenging weather conditions, these local people welcome you with open arms. This trek offers a peek into traditional mountain life through interactions with these communities. You will also find many monasteries, especially in Samdo and Samagaon. Some of the famous name of the monastery includes Pungen Monastery in Shyala Village and Serang Gompa in Bhi village. It makes this journey truly special is the warm hospitality of the locals and the fascinating mix of Tibetan and Nepali cultures.
Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization
Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), can occur when ascending to higher elevations too rapidly. This shows symptoms mainly where the air pressure and oxygen levels decrease.
To facilitate a safe trekking experience, we offer a warm-down jacket and four seasonal sleeping bags for your use during the journey. These items are crucial for maintaining warmth, especially during colder nights at higher altitudes. It is important to note that these items are provided temporarily and are to be returned after the completion of the trek.
Additionally, we will also provide first aid kits for both our staff and trekking groups. These kits are equipped to handle common health issues that may arise during the trek, including those related to altitude sickness. Our experienced guides and staff are trained to identify symptoms and provide you with the appropriate care.
If there is a severe case during the trek, then we will coordinate for emergency and rescue operations. In severe altitude sickness or other medical emergencies, we will contact authorities for an efficient response. Our team is well-prepared to assist you with evacuation if necessary, prioritizing the well-being of our trekkers.
Despite these provisions, prevention is very important when it comes to altitude sickness. Proper acclimatization is crucial, and our trek is designed to allow for a gradual ascent. It provides your body with the time it needs to adjust to higher elevations. Adequate hydration, rest, and monitoring of your own changes are also essential components of acclimatization.
The Best Time to Do the Manaslu Circuit Trek
One can do the Manaslu Circuit Trek any time of the year. However, to achieve the most out of this trek, we suggest Spring and Autumn seasons. During the spring seasons, the trail is very pleasant and chilly. You will see the colorful forests of blooming flowers.
After Autumn, spring is the best time to trek in Nepal. Autumn is the best time to do tourism activities in Nepal, including the Manaslu Trek. The views of the mountains are clear, and the weather is always stable. You can see the beautiful farmlands of rice and paddy. Also, during autumn, you will experience Nepali Festivals as well.
Life Himalaya has designed the short Manaslu trek in 10 days for trekkers who have limited time, and we do have also a Manaslu helicopter return back service for those who don’t want to drive with a 4*4 Jeep.
Necessary Permits for Manaslu Circuit Trek
Manaslu is one of the restricted regions of Nepal. To trek in Manaslu, you need a special restricted permit card. Likewise, ACAP and MCAP are other essential permit cards to trek in this region. Our company will help you to get all kinds of permit cards for trekking and the Manaslu expedition. You can’t trek solo in this region. The Government of Nepal prohibits the Manaslu Circuit Trek Solo in order to safeguard trekkers from potential threats. Therefore, a guide must be hired in order to complete the Manaslu Circuit Trek.
Safety Precautions During the Trek
When you are doing the Manaslu Circuit trek, safety is super important for a good and secure experience. Make sure to get used to the high altitude slowly by acclimatizing and walking at your own pace. Take it easy as you go up and take breaks when needed. The weather can be a bit unpredictable up there, so pack smart with layers and waterproof clothes.
Mainly, stay hydrated while you are at high altitude. The terrain will be harsh and tough, so strong boots that support your ankles are a must. We are also taking a first aid kit, but bring your preferred medicine if there are any allergies or complications. It’s a good idea to get a local guide who knows the area to make things safer. Lastly, follow the rules for trekking to keep things safe and cool.
Food Availability During the Manaslu Circuit Trek
During the Manaslu Circuit Trek, the availability of meals and food options is generally good, but it can vary along the route. In places like Soti Khola, Jagat, and Samagaon, where the infrastructure is better, teahouses and lodges offer a variety of meals. It includes local and international dishes.
As you go higher in altitude, especially in more remote areas, the options may become more limited, and the menu might focus on simple and energy-rich foods suitable for trekkers. You will find that vegetarian options are quite common. Most places are willing to accommodate dietary preferences if you let them know in advance. However, be aware that choices may be more limited in these remote areas. Additionally, bringing some snacks with you can be helpful in case you don’t find as many options as you’d like along the way.
The local food you will find on the Manaslu Circuit trek is mainly influenced by Tibetan culture. You can enjoy dumplings, noodles, and hot soups. Sometimes, you might come across yak butter and dishes made from barley, along with stews and curries with seasonal vegetables. A common and widely available meal is Dal Bhat, a traditional Nepali dish consisting of rice and lentil soup.
A must-try drink is butter tea, which is famous in the Himalayan region of Nepal. Butter tea not only helps you stay warm in the extreme cold but also provides relief from altitude sickness. So, it’s both a tasty treat and a practical choice for the challenging conditions of the trek.
Physical Fitness and Training For Manaslu Circuit Trekking
Getting ready for the Manaslu Circuit Trek in the Nepalese Himalayas is not an easy job. It’s no walk in the park, so you need to be ready both physically and mentally.
