Off-beat Kanchenjunga Trekking with Drohmo Ri adventure begins with a flight to Bhadrapur and a scenic drive to Taplejung before entering the wilderness toward Ghunsa and the high Kanchenjunga valleys. The itinerary includes acclimatization at Ghunsa and Khambachen, with opportunities to explore Buddhist cultural sites, monasteries, chortens, mani walls, and prayer flags, with the addition of Nupste Lake and Jannu Base Camp. Other Major highlights include the Lhonak Valley, Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (Pang Pema), Sele La, Mirgin La, Sinelapche La, and Oktang viewpoint.

Apart from those, a scenic 6000-meter hike to Drohmo Ri (the base camp of Drohmo Peak) is an off-beat route that offers one of the best views of the Kanchenjunga region. The trek concludes through Tseram, Yasang, Taplejung, and Bhadrapur before returning to Kathmandu for a relaxing final day.

The addition of Drohmo Ri (approx. 6100m) is because it doesnt need any climbing permit, as well as it doesnt require climbing gear and can be done in a single day without camping. The Tortong, Yamphudin, and Kanyam route is old and outdated, while the new route via Yasang is the popular route

day 01 Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m / 4,593 ft)

day 03 Flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur (91 m / 299 ft), Drive to Taplejung (1,820 m / 5,971 ft)

Take an early morning scenic flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur and continue by private vehicle toward Taplejung through the hills of eastern Nepal. It offers views of Everest (both sides). Makalu, Lhotshe and Cho Oyu on a clear day.  After that, we take a long drive that passes through lush valleys, terraced farmland, traditional settlements, and winding mountain roads before reaching Taplejung.

day 04 Drive from Taplejung to Sekathum (1,575 m / 5,167 ft)

Drive along rugged mountain roads toward Sekathum, following river valleys and passing through remote villages and forested hills. The journey gradually takes you deeper into the isolated Kanchenjunga region, where the Off-beat Kanchenjunga Trekking with Drohmo Ri route begins.

day 05 Trek from Sekathum to Gyapla (2,730 m / 8,957 ft)

Begin trekking through dense forests, crossing suspension bridges and following the Ghunsa Khola through a spectacular Himalayan landscape. The trail climbs gradually toward Gyapla, with views of forested slopes, waterfalls and traditional mountain settlements.

day 06 Trek from Gyapla to Ghunsa (3,427 m / 11,243 ft)

Continue through beautiful rhododendron, pine and birch forests toward the traditional Sherpa village of Ghunsa. The trail offers increasingly impressive mountain scenery, with glimpses of snow-covered peaks appearing above the surrounding valleys.

day 07 Rest and Exploration Day in Ghunsa (3,427 m / 11,243 ft)

Spend the day acclimatizing and exploring Ghunsa, one of the most important settlements in the Kanchenjunga region. A short hike around the village provides views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and an opportunity to experience local Tibetan-influenced Sherpa culture.

day 08 Trek from Ghunsa to Khambachen (4,050 m / 13,287 ft)

Trek north along the Ghunsa Khola through dramatic mountain scenery, passing rocky slopes, forests and glacial streams. As you approach Khambachen, the views become increasingly spectacular, with Jannu (Kumbhakarna) rising dramatically above the valley.

day 09 Trek from Khambachen to Jannu Base Camp and back to Khambachen (4,050 m / 13,287 ft)

Hike toward Jannu Base Camp, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Kanchenjunga region, with the immense south face of Mount Jannu (7,710 m) dominating the landscape.
The viewpoint offers dramatic views of Jannu, surrounding glaciers, rocky cliffs and high Himalayan valleys before returning to Khambachen.

day 10 Trek from Khambachen to Nuptse Lake and back to Khambachen (4,050 m / 13,287 ft) (optional - strenuous)

Explore the high-altitude Nuptse Lake area, surrounded by rugged Himalayan terrain and dramatic mountain walls. The hike provides a quieter alpine experience with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and glacial landscape before returning to Khambachen.

day 11 Trek from Khambachen to Lhonak (4,780 m / 15,682 ft)

The trail enters increasingly barren and dramatic high-altitude terrain as it follows the Kanchenjunga Glacier and the river valley toward Lhonak. The landscape opens into a spectacular glacial basin, with enormous peaks and rock faces rising on both sides of the valley.

day 12 Trek from Lhonak to Pangpema, North Kanchenjunga Base Camp (5,143 m / 16,873 ft) and back to Lhonak

Trek to Pangpema, the North Kanchenjunga Base Camp, the highest point of the main trekking route. From Pangpema, enjoy one of the finest panoramas of Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586 m) and the surrounding Himalayan giants. The viewpoint also provides dramatic views toward the Kanchenjunga Glacier, Chang Himal, Jannu and the massive northern faces of the Kanchenjunga massif before returning to Lhonak.

day 13 Trek from Lhonak to Drohmo Ri (approx. 6,100 m) and back to Lhonak (4,780 m / 15,682 ft)

An ambitious high-altitude ascent toward Drohmo Ri, offering exceptional views across the Kanchenjunga mountain range and surrounding glaciers. From the upper slopes, the panorama extends toward Kanchenjunga, Jannu, Chang Himal and the vast Tibetan Plateau. This is a demanding excursion requiring suitable acclimatization and favorable conditions.

day 14 Trek from Lhonak to Ghunsa (3,427 m / 11,243 ft)

Retrace the trail through the Kanchenjunga Glacier valley and descend gradually toward the forests and warmer landscapes around Ghunsa. The return journey provides a different perspective of the massive Himalayan walls and glacial valleys experienced on the way to Pangpema.

day 15 Optional Rest and Laundry Day in Ghunsa (3,427 m / 11,243 ft)

Enjoy a relaxed day in Ghunsa for rest, laundry, and recovery after the high-altitude section of the trek. You can explore the village, visit local monasteries and enjoy the surrounding mountain scenery while preparing for the southern section.

day 16 Trek from Ghunsa to Sele Le Camp (4,290 m / 14,075 ft)

The trail climbs steeply through forests toward Sele Le Camp, gradually leaving the main Ghunsa Valley behind. As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes more open and alpine, with increasingly impressive views of Jannu and the surrounding Himalayan ridges.

day 17 Trek from Sele Le Camp to Tseram (3,870 m / 12,697 ft)

Cross the high passes of Sinelapche La, Sinion La and Mirgin La, one of the most scenic sections of the Kanchenjunga Circuit. The viewpoints from the passes offer outstanding panoramas of Jannu, Makalu, Baruntse, Kanchenjunga and the surrounding Himalayan ranges, followed by a descent toward Tseram.

day 18 Trek from Tseram to Oktang Viewpoint (4,730–4,900 m / 15,518–16,076 ft) and back to Tseram

Hike toward Oktang Viewpoint, the gateway to the South Kanchenjunga Base Camp, with spectacular views of the Kanchenjunga massif and surrounding glaciers. The viewpoint is particularly impressive for seeing Kanchenjunga’s southern face, Jannu, Kabru, Rathong and the Kanchenjunga Glacier before returning to Tseram.

day 19 Trek from Tseram to Yasang Kharka (approx. 3,400 m / 11,155 ft)

Descend through forests and remote mountain terrain toward Yasang Kharka, following trails through the southern Kanchenjunga wilderness. The landscape gradually changes from high alpine terrain to greener forests, with waterfalls, river valleys and mountain villages appearing along the route.

day 20 Drive from Yasang Kharka to Taplejung (1,820 m / 5,971 ft)

Leave the trekking trails and drive toward Taplejung through winding mountain roads and remote settlements. The journey provides a final opportunity to enjoy the landscapes of eastern Nepal before returning to the main road network.

day 21 Drive from Taplejung to Bhadrapur (91 m / 299 ft), optional evening flight back to Kathmandu.

Drive from Taplejung to Bhadrapur, descending from the Himalayan foothills toward the warmer lowland areas of eastern Nepal. The scenery changes dramatically from mountain forests and valleys to subtropical landscapes and the plains.

day 22 Rest day in Kathmandu or Flight from Bhadrapur to Kathmandu (1,400 m)

If we stay in Bhadrapur, we will take a morning flight from Bhadrapur to Kathmandu, subject to the flight schedule. After arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy a well-earned rest following the Off-beat Kanchenjunga Trekking with Drohmo Ri.

The Off-beat Kanchenjunga Trekking with Drohmo Ri follows a spectacular and remote route through eastern Nepal, combining the North and South Base Camp approaches. The journey begins with a flight to Bhadrapur and a scenic drive to Taplejung before trekking through Sekathum, Ghunsa, Khambachen, Lhonak, and Pangpema, the North Kanchenjunga Base Camp.

Optional high-altitude excursions include Jannu Base Camp, Nuptse Lake, and Drohmo Ri. The route then crosses the dramatic Sele Le high passes to Tseram and continues to Oktang Viewpoint, near the South Base Camp. The trek concludes through Yasang Kharka and Taplejung before returning to Kathmandu.

The other Normal Kanchenjunga Trek will pass several pristine villages of Mitlung, Chirwa, Sukethum, Amjilosa, Gyabla, Ghunsa, Kambachen, and Lhonak to the northern base camp of Pangpema or Kanchenjunga. After spending some time in the base camp, you will descend the trail through similar paths you have taken at the beginning of this trek. However, wont include the viewpoints that this trek offers.
