Kathmandu/KathmanduHave you already achieved the heights of peaks over 6000 m, and now are at crossroads in your next mountaineering adventure? If so, then let Life Himalaya trekking guide you to its Himlung expedition, which will present you with the new challenge of 7000 m above peak in Nepal.
We assure you our Himlung expedition is literally a true Himalayan mountaineering expedition where you will conquer the majestic Himlung Himal extending to 7126 m height into the sky.
This peak, in fact, is regarded as one of the most accessible seven-thousand-meter peaks in Nepal, which could be the perfect starting point for you in the world of conquering the highest peaks in the world.
The Himlung Himal is found in the northern corner of Nepal, specifically in the Nar Phu Valley of the Manaslu area, near Tibet. This amazing peak is positioned between the higher frames of the Manaslu (8163 m) and Annapurna I (8091 m), also surrounded by the Himjung (7096 m) and Nemjung (7140 m).
The Himlung Summit is the astounding pyramid to see the seemingly close snowy walls of the Annapurna Massifs with I, II, III, and IV, along with Dhaulagiri, Lamjung, and Manaslu that look out over the horizon.
The summit also does not pose any difficult technical sections or crevasses, with the sharpest section not exceeding the gradient of 35 degrees. The Himlung summit was first successfully ascended through Nar Phu Valley following the northwest ridge in 1992 by a Japanese expedition led by Akio Koizumi.
As for our Himlung expedition, you will also be able to discover the secrets that are hidden in the oldest villages of Nar and Phu. Untouched by commercial tourism, these villages are believed to have existed for over 800 years.
You will see the eternally standing monasteries of Tashi Lakhang and Nar Phedi, while you will also conquer the overbearing height of the Kang La Pass (5306 m) to increase your acclimatization.
You will also have the opportunity to meet the Khampas, Gurungs, and Ghale communities, and explore their fascinatingly, unusual Tibetan Buddhist customs.
Throughout our 25 days Himlung expedition, Life Himalaya Trekking will provide you with the assistance of our expert climbing guides and porters. Our Himlung expedition itinerary also prioritizes a very smooth and gradual progression that reduces the chances of acute mountain sickness.
Additionally, our team of guides will also offer you technical training and assistance in the intermediate camps of the Himlung Summit. Our Himlung expedition presents an AD+ challenge, suitable for experienced climbers, and is ideal for spring or autumn climbs.
Our Himlung expedition at first will follow the very popular and regularly trekked route of the Annapurna Circuit up to Ngawal Village, where you will have an extra night for the right acclimatization in comfort.
To follow the northwest route to the Himlung Summit, the route will diver towards the Nar Phu Valley after traversing the over challenging altitude of the Kang La Pass.
From the Nar Phu Valley, your Himlung expedition will now follow the route to the Base Camp beneath the Himlung Summit, a sanctuary for the next couple of days.
From the base camp of Mount Himlung, several rotation climbs will take place between the base camp and the intermediary camps of I and II before you finally settle at Camp III, aka assault camp.
You will then engage in the successful Himlung summit attempt, after which your descent to Camp II will occur.
After you reach the Himlung Base Camp, your route will again reconnect with the Annapurna trail through Koto, Meta, and Besisahar, from where your Kathmandu journey then commences.

LodgeToday will be one of the most arduous and longest days of our Himlung expedition, as we will have to confront the overpowering challenge of the massive altitude of the Kang La Pass.
Starting the day very early, we will ascend steeply and relentlessly along the rugged mountain slopes to reach the summit of this pass. In the final segment, we may have to climb along a little bit of snow.
Once at the Pass, we will have the most perfect Himalayan panorama forefront made by the enormous presence of the Annapurna massif’s peaks- I, II, III, and IV alongside Kanguru, Gangapurna, Tilicho, and our beloved Himlung.
We will now descend very attentively and steadily towards the high-altitude village of Nar, passing down through the picturesque glacial lake. Observe the surroundings composed by Ganesh, Gyaji Kang, Manaslu, and Kanguru, we will cross the Temdenzon Khola and settle at the very enigmatic high altitude village of Nar.

Traversing a rugged terrain, we will get inside the valley of the mighty Himlung. We will navigate across the moraine of the Pangri Glacier and engage in relentless, demanding ascent till we are at 4850 m altitude, where our base camp will be.
For the upcoming day, this camp will serve as our warm sanctuary, so we will establish our tents and try to settle in comfortably.

TentThese are the days dedicated to ascending the massive Himlung Summit. But first, our Sherpa crew will conduct a small puja ceremony at the Himlung Base Camp, praying for the success and removal of any hindrances.
Then, in the preceding days, we will progress towards our intermediate camps, which will be three for the Himlung Summit. Please understand that our climb will largely depend on the weather conditions and our physical well-being.
So, we cannot stick to the mountaineering effort to the last detail, and we will have to make different choices each day and each hour. However, we have placed enough reserve days for the summit attempt, so if the initial attempt is not successful, the next attempt can be carried out.
However, it will be imperative to clear out all the intermediate camps and reach the base camp of Himlung by the evening of day 21.
The route that we will follow is as below:
Ascend from the Himlung Base Camp to Camp I, 5450, 4 to 6 hours
This section of the Himlung expedition is largely free of technical challenges. We climb over a broad Pangri glacier moraine, steadily ascending over rocky rubble.
There will be a few areas where we may encounter steeper inclines, but they pose no threat or concern. After we arrive at the edge of the Pangri Glacier, we will have to gear ourselves up with crampons.
Literally, this spot is called the Crampon Point, from where the climbing route will now run along the icy slope and end at the ridge below the glacier tongue. This is where the Camp I for our Himlung expedition will be set up.
Ascend from Camp I to Camp II, 6000 m, 5 to 6 hours
The route extending from Camp I to Camp II is more challenging, characterized by steep and exposed areas. From Camp I, we will have to traverse a small plateau, then start ascending sharply along the snowy and rocky gully.
The route ahead will open to an ice shelf, where we will have to make use of the fixed ropes. The slope here is inclined at 35 degrees, which is regarded as the steepest incline along the route to the summit.
After crossing this section, the route ahead will be less demanding but will remain exposed till we are at Camp II, located on a wide flat plateau.
Ascend from Camp II to Camp III, 6350 m, 4 to 5 hours
This is the last route that we will have to face before we assault the Himlung Summit. There will be a treacherous traverse today as we climb a sharp vertical icy slope to a gentle ridge where our Camp III will be located.
Any difficult sections will be crossed with the help of the fixed ropes. From here, we can see the entire route to the Himlung Summit, which runs along a wide, icy slope.
Climb the Himlung Summit, 7126 m, and descend to Camp I, 9 to 10 hours
The moment to undertake the final push to the Himlung summit has arrived, which will begin between 2 AM to 4 AM. An icy slope from Camp III will carry us up towards the slope that reaches 35 degrees.
But no technical challenges are essentially present; surely the climb will, however, be long, around 6 to 7 hours, after which we will be waving our flags from the Himlung Summit.
The Manaslu Peak (8163 m) and Annapurna I (8091 m) are excellently visible along with the clear visual of the Dhaulagiri, Lamjung, Annapurna II, III, and IV, and the entire Nar Phu Valley beneath.
After a while at the summit, we will begin our descent to Camp I for the night.
Descend to Himlung Base Camp, 5 to 6 hours
We will take down our camps and then start gathering our waste. Then we will make our way down to the base camp of Mount Himlung, where we will properly dispose of our waste. The descent will be equally harder and need careful concentration like before.
Attention
Please know that the Himlung expedition itinerary is adjustable and can be changed and adjusted to resolve any acclimatization difficulties faced by the climbers or any adverse weather conditions in the camps.
Our climbing guides will engage you in a climbing rotation between base camp, Camp I, and Camp II, so that each climber can be sufficiently acclimatized before the final push to the summit.
Our guide will also instruct you on how to properly use your climbing gear confidently, such as trekking poles, ice axes, jumars, crampons, harnesses, and fixed ropes.
Please note that our climbing guide leader will have the authority to change or adjust the climbing plan according to the climatic conditions and the health of the climbers.

7-8 hrsFill your bags with precious memories of your Himlung expedition. Life Himalaya Trekking will once again organize a private transfer to TIA for your return flight home.
Spring in Nepal, spanning between March to May, is regarded as an excellent time for the Himlung expedition, followed by the fall in Nepal occurring between September to November.
The route during spring, however, can be quite busy, but the weather will be extraordinarily pleasant, green, and dotted with bright colored landscapes. Autumn, on the other hand, will be less crowded with the remarkable chance to spot many beautiful creatures of Nar and Phu villages.
The summer months of June, July, and August are the monsoon in Nepal, and we do not recommend this time due to the concern of landslides. Winter can also be chosen between December to February, but you will face heavy snow on the pass and at the high camps of the Himlung summit.
The Himlung Summit is the peak designated with AD+ difficulty grade, with the requirement of a level 4 fitness. This means the Himlung summit is the easy and non-technical 7000 m peak that can be your ideal first experience if you are looking for your first challenge at this altitude.
According to the statistics, besides Lenin and Baruntse Peaks, the Himlung Peak has one of the highest success rates for summits falling at 7000 m or above level.
However, that being said, you should never take the Himlung expedition lightly, as challenges do exist. As for the trekking route of the Himlung expedition, it runs partly through Annapurna and partly through the Nar Phu Valley, rated as a level III hiking adventure.
The trek itself poses you the strain of the Kang La Pass, which is also a perfect opportunity for increasing acclimatization before tackling the overpowering demand of the Himlung Summit.
The route following from Camp I of the Himlung summit to Camp II is not only long but also technically challenging. It is because the route consists of climbing over the exposed and sharp scree slope that is inclined at 35 degrees.
Additionally, the route also requires the crossing of the high Pangri Glacier and deep crevasses, where fixed ropes have to be employed for safe crossing.
The day of the Himlung Summit attack is the most arduous and longest stretch of the Himlung expedition. The summit push will necessitate steep vertical climbing of around 1100 m from Camp III along a slope inclined at 35 degrees.
Once the summit push is over, the long descending then remains, which is equally demanding as the crossing of the route from Camp II to Camp I will also be involved.
Himlung Peak is not a Himalayan Summit for absolute beginners who lack any high-altitude trekking or climbing experience. For the Himlung expedition, you must have ascended any peaks around the world with an altitude between 5000 to 6500 m.
You must have semi-technical knowledge and have at least tackled one easy technical peak before attempting the Himlung Summit. If you are a complete beginner, then we recommend you climb Mera Peak in Nepal, or any other peak that speaks with you, such as Denali, Elbrus, Kilimanjaro, etc.
Altitude sickness, aka Acute Mountain Sickness/AMS, is yet another challenge of the Himlung expedition. However, it doesn’t mean that every climber will suffer from the altitude effect, but some of us may.
To make our every climber feel physically at ease at the high altitude, our Himlung expedition itinerary has implemented the sawtooth method of acclimatization, which means sleep low and climb high.
We have also included a break for an extra night at Ngawal village, followed by the ascent of the 5306 m challenge of the Kang La Pass. Also, there will be a rotation ascent between base camp and Camp I and II before the final summit push.
Despite these measures, the initial signs such as insomnia, headache, fatigue, bodyache, and dizziness may appear in some of the climbers, which can be managed with adequate rest, a break at ascent, optional descent, and enough hydration.
Taking Diamox before getting to the high altitude can also be one of the effective ways to improve adaptation.
Physical preparation for the Himlung expedition must be thorough, so you should begin at least six months ahead of your expedition. We recommend you begin with walking, jogging, running, cycling, hiking, swimming, and then mountaineering.
Remember, your weekly training routine should consist of two moderate sessions, each with a duration of 60 to 75 minutes. There should also be two intense sessions with a duration of 30 to 35 minutes.
You can also increase your endurance with push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, and squats. Do not overdo any exercise and stop your physical training ten days before your Himlung expedition.
Although the Himlung Summit is a nontechnical peak, there are certain sections of the summit that necessitate moderate technical skills, such as climbing and descending along fixed ropes, walking with crampons, as well as using climbing equipment like an ice axe and jumar.
Of course, our climbing guides will provide you with technical training before the summit push and will also support you throughout the climb. However, it is essential that you have sufficient skills to handle any challenges independently.
Therefore, we advise you to train yourself in a fixed line course and master the use of any mountaineering gear. We also suggest you train yourself on rappelling techniques and tying different types of knots, such as Figure 8, Alpine Butterfly, Overhand Knot, or Munter Hitch.
You should also know how to cross the crevasses safely over ladders and switch safely between ropes. Please also think about joining climbing walls or rock climbing courses.
As you spend your time in Kathmandu, you will be accommodated in a three-star hotel in the tourist center of the capital. During your trek up to the Himlung Base Camp, you will stay in very atmospheric Himalayan lodges of Annapurna and Nar Phu.
The lodges in Annapurna will be reasonably comfortable, but the comfort level in Nar and Phu will be more limited. During the Himlung expedition, you will sleep in two-person tents provided by Life Himalaya.
Likewise, all meals on the trek and Himlung expedition are part of the 25 days Himlung expedition cost, but you will need to take care of your meals in Kathmandu, except for breakfast.
During the trek, we will all dine at the mountain lodges while camping, and our meals will be prepared by our cooks. This will include hot water, tea, coffee, and three meals, plus snacks.
With regard to your transportation, Life Himalaya Trekking will facilitate private airport transfers in a four-wheel vehicle. At the beginning and conclusion of the journey, a local bus or shared jeep will be used as per the group size for transfer between Kathmandu and Dharapani, Koto, and Besisahar to Kathmandu.
Please also explore our upgrade offerings for accommodation and transportation.
Regardless of all your extensive preparation, the unexpected can happen in the mountains. Out of the blue, you may fall, you may suffer from serious AMS, or any climate may take a drastic turn.
Therefore, please have travel insurance with helicopter rescue in the mountains, which is also mandatory for the Himlung expedition. Make sure that for 25 days Himlung expedition, the altitude is specified up to 7200 m in your policy.
Also mention delays, loss or damage to your climbing gear, extended stays, or cancellation of the expedition coverage in your policy.
There are a few requirements for the Himlung expedition, with the need of climbing and trekking permits, along with a restricted permit and Conservation permits. The detail is as follows:
We must need the authorization from the Nepal Mountaineering Association/NMA for climbing the Himlung Summit in the form of a climbing permit, and the pricing is as follows:
Since Nar Phu is a special limited area designated as a restricted region, we need to have:
Restricted Area Permit for Nar Phu Valley obtainable from the Immigration office, and the pricing is as follows:
The other obligatory permits that are obtainable from the tourism office in Kathmandu, with their pricing, are as follows:
According to the guidelines mandated by the Nepal Government, the Himlung expedition will also require the appointment of the Liaison Officer/LO who will ensure constant communication and follow of the rules throughout the expedition.
Generally, the fees for the LO are around USD 3000, which is equally shared among group members.
Likewise, a garbage deposit of USD 500 per team will also be needed to encourage all the climbers to bring back their waste and dispose of it properly. You will get the deposit back if you comply with the rules, and the amount deductible will depend on the guidelines as dictated by NMA.
Life Himalaya Trekking will offer you a double occupancy room at a distinguished three-star hotel in Kathmandu during our Himlung expedition.
Your double occupancy accommodation will include two large single beds, complemented with hot water, a bath, and WiFi. However, if you like to have more extravagant options, then we can upgrade you to four or five-star hotels that meet the highest international hospitality standards.
You will also have access to superior utilities such as a gym, spa, sophisticated decor, elegantly furnished rooms, a marble bathroom with a rain shower, and much more.
By adding a little extra to your trip cost, you can conveniently elevate your Kathmandu stay to one of greater luxury and comfort. Please communicate your preferences to us in advance so we can make the necessary arrangements.
Traveling in a shared vehicle or a local transport will be very invigorating, but it will also be tiring, and less flexible that sticks to the schedule, accommodating all the other travelers.
As a solution, we offer you the upgrade transport option where you can opt for a private jeep ride from Kathmandu to Dharapani or from Besisahar to Kathmandu.
This way, you can have your own traveling schedule with a short duration and as many stops as you desire.
This is the expedition leading you to one of the adoring Himalayan peaks of Nepal, Himlung, which stands at 7126 m.
