Overview of Tukuche Peak Climbing

First summited by a team of Swiss climbers in 1969, Mt. Tukuche is located in front of the Annapurna Himalayan Range and Mt. Dhaulagiri I. Given its remote location and inaccessibility, Tukuche Peak Climbing is not a commercial hit by any means.

To give you a perspective, as per the reports published by the government of Nepal, only four people visited this trekking destination in 2022. It’s basically one of the few untouched and undisturbed Himalayan trekking destinations that you can go to.

The peak is named after the village of Tukuche, which lies in the Manang district of Dhaulagiri zone. The village is inhabited by Thakali people who are famous all over Nepal for their traditional Thakali meals.

The Tukuche peaks stand 6929 meters (22703 ft) tall, which makes it the second tallest trekking peak in the world, next to Aconcagua (6962 m). At such a high elevation, it is absolutely necessary to follow all the safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Our Tukuche Peak climbing itinerary is designed to give you plenty of time to acclimatize, enjoy the scenes, and learn about the local culture. On this 23-day journey, you will travel from the bustling cities of Pokhara and Kathmandu to the remote villages of the Dhaulagiri zone. Along the way, you will stop by beautiful Thakali villages that will leave you wanting for more Thakali meals.

Tukuche Peak Climbing is one of the most beautiful and authentic Himalayan treks you can take. Being a less popular trekking destination does not mean that something is wrong; everything is just perfect, and after you are done with the trek, you will start to wonder why this place is not the number 1 go-to.

Considering that we have such an opportunity to take you to an authentic Himalayan trekking experience, we designed a trekking package that is the best price-to-service experience you will get. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the Tukuche Peak Climbing package.

Highlights of Tukuche Peak Climbing

  • One of the highest trekking destinations in the world.
  • Scenic view of the Annapurna range and Dhaulagiri I.
  • One of the least crowded Himalayan trekking destinations.
  • Experience the Thakali culture and food.
  • Live among the Thakali people.
  • Trek to almost 7000 meters above sea level.

Tukuche Peak Climbing Itinerary

Arrival in Kathmandu

As your flight lands at the international airport in Kathmandu, we will be waiting for you at the terminal to welcome you to our home country and ultimately escort you to your designated stay.

Unlike most countries, Nepal offers visas on arrival to most international tourists, so you do not have to apply for a visa online before taking the flight. Upon your arrival, you will be requested to fill out your tourist visa application, which should not take long.

After everything is done, you will have to pay a fee to the airport officials which is based upon the duration of your stay. Note that this is your personal expense, and our trek package will not cover any of those expenses.

What we will cover is your accommodation at a 3-star hotel for the rest of your nights in Kathmandu. In total, you will be staying for four nights in Kathmandu at a 3-star hotel, which the Tukuche Peak Climbing package covers. We will be responsible for providing breakfast each morning; the rest of the meals will be your personal expenses during your stay in Kathmandu.

Rest in Kathmandu (Guide meeting, briefing at department tourism Nepal, climbing permits)

We understand that you might have jet-lagged from a long flight from home, and we want you to rest as much as possible because we will begin our trek on the 3rd day of the Tukuche Peak Climbing journey. If you are feeling well-rested, you can spend some time exploring Kathmandu.

Kathmandu has a lot of attractions and activities that you can indulge in. But we recommend that you do not do any physical activities that could make you tired or potentially harm you or sprain your joints. It would be so anti-climactic if you were to be injured just a day before the trek.

Instead of physical activities, you should enjoy the different historic and religious sites. These temples and buildings have a unique look; they have wood carvings all over, and the architecture is too good not to take a picture.

Besides sightseeing, you will have to attend a meeting with the guide, who is going to debrief you on the trip you are about to take; he will make sure that you understand where you are going and how you will be traveling (routes, food, accommodations, etc.) You will also be introduced to the porters who will be carrying your luggage all the way to the top and back.

We will also take you to the Department of Tourism, where you will be officially briefed about the Tukuche Peak Climbing journey.

As per the laws of Nepal, you are required to get a permit if you are going to climb any peaks. The same rule applies to Tukuche Peak climbing; you will need a TIMS card to climb this peak. Along the route, you will also have to get local permits, which are a type of fund collection for the betterment of the local communities and villages.

Fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara Airport and fly to Jomsom Trek to Marpha

On the third day of the Tukuche Peak climbing, we will move towards the beautiful city of Pokhara. A 25-minute flight from Kathmandu will take us to Pokhara, where we will head towards Jomsom.

The town of Jomson is the most popular town in the Mustang district, mainly because it is the market hub and the gateway to the upper Mustang regions and all the trekking destinations in the area.

Being the commercial center of the region, Jomsom sees a lot of activity throughout the day and offers trekkers a place with all the necessary and additional amenities. But we will not be staying at Jomsom. After landing, we will promptly get on the road to Marpha.

Marpha is a beautiful little village famous for its apple brandy, apple juice, dried apples, and stone houses, which are traditional to the Thakalai people. This village is an important site for tourism, and it also has a Tibetan Refugee Camp.

The name Marpha translates to “hard-working people”; Mar means “hard-working” and Pha means “people.” It’s a scenic village, which is probably why it was made a part of the Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Jomsom to Marpha is just 5.5 km, which should take us about 2 hours to reach. We will be staying at Marpha for the night. One of the main reasons for choosing Marpha over Jomsom is the fact that Marpha is just too aesthetic. Sure, Jomson offers a few extra accommodation options and amenities, but it has none of Marpha’s appealing characteristics.

During the entire trekking days, we will be responsible for providing you with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You are free to choose anything from the menu of the lodges where we will be staying. Accommodation and food-related expenses will be covered by the Tukuche Peak Climbing package.

Marpha (acclimatization)

The best thing you can do on a Himalayan trekking journey is to acclimatize yourself and keep your body well-hydrated. This will save you a lot of trouble, as altitude sickness is really inconvenient and might even make you quit the trek under rare circumstances.

We will be staying at Marpha for two days. You can use these two resting days to explore the village.

Start off your morning by joining the morning prayers at the local monastery. You can see a panoramic view of the Gandaki River valley from the monastery, and the morning sun rays hit you differently in the Himalayas.

You can visit the Apple Farm there, which was established in 1966. This organization helped to pool all the apple production in the region, giving birth to a major production farm that produced on a small-industry level. This farm was the first to export the apple products of this region to the cities of Nepal.

The distillery is another place you can visit. The apple brandy produced in Marpha is the best apple brandy made in Nepal. You will be given a sample of their apple cider to taste, and with permission, you can pluck the apples off the tree. These apples of Marpha are delicious; after they are exported to other cities, their prices skyrocket and triples.

Another thing you can do is climb the Marpha hill, the view of the village from the top of the hill is amazing, to say the least. In addition to that, ascending a couple hundred meters from where you are staying is a great acclimatization trick that seasoned trekkers use. This lets your body feel more relaxed when you eventually descend back to your accommodation.

While in Marpha, you should also try out the Thakali Khana set (lunch/dinner) and Thakalai Khaja Set (supper), both of which are traditional dishes. Other things include sun-dried apples, apple pie, apple cider, apple brandy, Thukpa (a bowl of dumplings and noodles with soup), etc. But if you want to have some Western fast food, you can go to a modern restaurant in the village where you should be able to get burgers and pizza at the least.

Marpha (acclimatization)

The people of Marpha are very welcoming, especially towards international tourists, since most of the Thakalis there can not communicate in English, and they hope that smiling at tourists makes them feel more comfortable and welcome.

You will also be spending your 5th day of the Tukuche Peak Climbing at Marpha. There’s so much to do in Marpha, so you should not be bored anytime soon. We will get moving the following day and for the time being, you can continue to explore the village.

Trek from Marpha to Yak Kharka

The name Yak Kharka translates to Alpine Pasture for the Yaks (Kharka means Alpine Pasture). Long before this place was a village, the people of this region used this place as a pasture land for their Yaks. At present, Yaks still graze the grounds of this village.

Yaks are like bison; they are huge, hairy, and friendly-looking, but Yaks are unpredictable and temperamental; we recommend not getting close to any Yaks for photos.

Yaks are the prime mammals of this region; they produce milk, which villagers use to make cheese, curd, and other dairy products. Though it is not that often, Yaks are also reared for meat. Their meat is the complete opposite of tender, but you should use what you have in this region, not complain.

After 3 to 4 hours of trekking, we will reach Yak Kharka from Marpha. We will start the trek after breakfast and have our lunch on the way or after we reach Yak Kharka.

Acclimatization at Yak Kharka (rest day)

We will be moving slowly for this trek; there is no use rushing our way to the top. Rushing will only make us sick and unable to continue the trek.

Another thing to remember, after Yak Kharka you are likely not going to get any network coverage on your phone. If you need to make a call, you can use the landlines that tea shops and lodges have. They will charge you for it by the minute; this is your personal expense, which the trek package will not cover.

Since you have plenty of time to kill, you can just explore the village, climb a hill, and watch the locals.

Tukuche Peak Climbing - Essential Information

Tukuche Peak Climbing Difficulty

On a scale of 1 to 10, we rate this trek a solid 6. The Tukuche Peak Climbing is not that difficult, but putting in consistent effort for weeks is a difficult thing to do. You need to be mentally prepared to trek for weeks away from your modern and comfortable life and away from the internet.

Since we will be climbing a peak 6929 meters tall, it will obviously be a little challenging; you will have to learn how to use certain tools if you are not familiar with them. One of the hardest things about this trek is the cold temperature, decreased oxygen level, and the risk of altitude sickness.

In addition to that, you will be unable to connect with anyone during the peak climbing days. You will be out of touch for more than a week, which might be hard for some people to even imagine.

Best seasons to Climb Tukuche Peak

The best season to travel this Tukuche Peak Climbing trek is spring. During the months of March, April, and May, the weather is usually predictable and clear which is a great thing for trekkers. Spring season is the peak trekking season, which means that most seasonal establishments, including lodges, tea houses, and eateries along the way, will be open and offer a lot of options.

Some business owners live in remote villages and only come to the Mustang region during the peak trekking season to do a little business and hopefully make a profit.

Another great season to travel this trek is autumn. During the months of September, October, and November, the weather steers clear, and there is less chance of rain. You should avoid traveling during other seasons as it can be problematic.

Can a beginner join this trip?

Yes, a beginner can join this Tukuche Peak Climbing but only till the base camp. This trek to base camp does not require trekkers to have prior trekking or peak climbing experience. The only thing that you should have is the willingness to train for the trek and the mentality to get through this long journey.

We are not saying that this is the perfect base camp trek for beginners and first-timers, but this is one of the best options. Beginners can work on their trekking abilities and sharpen their equipment using skills, while first-timers have a place to learn about all the basic equipment and use them in the process.

The climb from base camp to the summit is a technical path. This part of the trek is only recommended to experienced climbers.

Our guides will help beginners and first-timers navigate the route to base camp while our porters will be taking care of all your luggage. This should definitely help you focus on the Tukuche Peak Climbing trek.

Altitude Sickness During Tukuche Climbing

The highest point of the Tukuche Peak Climbing is 6929 meters, which is a considerable height. At such extreme conditions, the oxygen percentage in the air decreased by over 50%. You are susceptible to altitude sickness under such conditions, but since we will be ascending at a safe pace, you should be doing fine.

Altitude sickness does not always mean that you will have to cancel the trek and return to the cities. Sometimes, altitude sickness is just a mere headache or lightheadedness that goes away once you rest at a lower elevation.

That is why we will be spending a day or two in the same village. Our bodies need time to adapt to the changing environment and the difference in oxygen levels.

Keeping yourself hydrated throughout the trek is also another way to keep yourself away from altitude sickness.

Accommodation, Food, and Drink

Your Tukuche Peak Climbing package covers all the accommodations during this entire 23-day journey, including four nights stay in a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu, a night stay in Pokhara, and all the necessary accommodation during the trekking days. While climbing the actual peak, you will be sleeping in tents and sleeping bags as there is no other option.

If the lodges we stay at charge a certain amount for WiFi usage and device charging, we will not be responsible for covering those expenses as they are your personal expenses. We will make sure that the lodges we stay at have all the basic amenities as well as a few additional facilities. Remember that these regions are barely accessible, so getting even basic amenities is a treat for which we should be thankful.

You will have a lot of food options until we reach the village of Yak Kharka. Compared to the other villages, Yak Kharka is not very developed, which is good in a way as it keeps the tradition of the village alive, but it also means that you will have to compromise on certain things.

Yak Kharka is also the last place where we will get any kind of cooked food. For the rest of the trek, we will be surviving off canned food since we will be climbing the Tukuche peak. We would also like to request that you make us aware if you are allergic to certain types of food. The last thing we want for you is to leave the trek mid-way.

As a part of the package, we will be responsible for providing you with breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the trekking days. While you are in the city, we will only be providing breakfast; other meals are your own personal expense. And after the trek has ended, we will be providing you with a farewell dinner.

This Tukuche Peak Climbing package will not cover any drinks, including water.

Transportation

As a part of the service, we will be responsible for all the land transportation this Tukuche Peak Climbing itinerary requires. This includes pick up and drop off at the international airport, pick up and drop off at the regional airports of Pokhara and Kathmandu, flight to Pokhara from Kathmandu and back, and flight to Jomsom from Pokhara and back.

Please note that this Tukuche Peak Climbing trek package does not cover your international flight expenses.

Permit For Tukuche Peak Climb

TIMS card (Trekkers’ Information Management System) Tukuche Peak permit and ACAP permit (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) are the three permits you are legally required to have to trek this route. These permits cost NRs. 5000 in total, which will be covered by the Tukuche Peak Climbing package. Our guide will get these permits for you to save you from the hassle.

In addition to that, you will also need the Tukuche Peak permit which will cost $400 per person during the spring season, $200 per person during autumn and $100 per person in summer and winter.

Moreover, a $500 deposit is required by the law, you will get this deposit back if you retrieve all the garbage disposals you made along the way. This deposit will not be covered by the trekking package.

These permits are there for a reason; the proceedings from these permits are dedicated to improving the route of the villages and bringing in modern amenities.

Trip Preparation And Fitness

This trek is not a difficult one at all, but still, we recommend you exercise a little, as being more than ready to never hurt anyone. We recommend doing cardio exercises to build your stamina and core strength. These two things will be very useful while you are climbing the peak.

If you are a fit person and you live a physically active life, you should not really have to worry about whether you can complete this trek.

Gadgets Charging & Internet

You will have the chance to charge your gadgets all along the way. If the lodges charge you a buck or two for electricity, you are on your own; the package does not cover such expense. As we reach the base camp, there is no more electricity; we will have to rely on solar power to charge our lights and gadgets.
6For the entire duration of the climb (day 9 to day 17), we will be dependent on solar power and have a little backup of battery just in case we need extra hours of light at night.

As for the internet, you will not get any chance to connect to it once we reach Yak Kharka. Up until Marpha, you will get to connect to WiFi, but up there in Yak Kharka, you will not even get cell phone networks. This is truly a remote destination.

Your Extra expenses

Your extra expenses include your international flight to Nepal and back home, your visa fees, your personal travel insurance, emergency rescue services expenses, hot showers in the lodges, satellite phones, oxygen, personal trekking equipment, and tips for the guide and porters.

These expenses are a bit too much for the package and that is why we have excluded them from the package. Also, these are more of a personal expense.

What To Expect During This Tukuche Peak Climbing Trip?

All in all, you can expect to have an adventurous 23-day vacation in the high Himalayas surrounded by tall peaks. We will take you to a truly untouched trekking destination that is sure to be your preferred topic of talk for weeks to come. Also, bring a good camera with you because we guarantee you will be taking a lot of pictures.

During the trek, we will spend our nights at Thakali villages, these villages are scenic and offer a lot of exploration. You will see a lot of interesting and new things, that you will feel like a kid in Disneyland.

One of the best things about this trek is that, given the sheer altitude of the peak, it is not as difficult as one might think. Well, at least the trail is not as difficult as most people think. Other aspects, like not getting to connect with anyone for weeks unless you buy a satellite phone or no internet for nine days, are a pretty wild commitment for some people.

Despite all the hardships that one might face during this face, the views and the adventure are more than worth the time and effort you will spend during this trek. Moreover, do not expect to meet a lot of fellow travelers; you will likely not meet any other trekkers during the trek.

Tukuche Peak Climbing - FAQs

If you need to be evacuated at any point during this trek, we will contact the emergency services that will come and rescue you.
