Talking about the summit, the Island Peak is locally known as Imja Tse, situated in Chhukung Valley of Khumbu. It lies directly in front of the impressive south wall of Lhotse.
It was named Island Peak in 1953 by Eric Shipton, who noted its resemblance to a small island surrounded by a vast sea of ice. Later the same year, a British expedition team, including Charles Wylie, Charles Evans, Alf Gregory, Tenzing Norgay, and seven Sherpas, achieved the first recorded ascent of Island Peak as part of their training for the historic first ascent of Mount Everest.
The summit is categorized as a Trekking Peak and is the most accessible for beginner climbers. Climbing this peak requires good physical stamina rather than extensive climbing experience.
As you stand on top of its pointed summit, you will find yourself encircled by the towering white giants of Everest (8848 m), Lhotse (8516 m), Makalu (8485 m), Baruntse (7162 m), Pumori (7161 m), Ama Dablam (6812 m), Thamserku (6608 m), Cholatse (6440 m), and many more.
As for the journey of our Island Peak climbing with helicopter return, it will begin with an exciting early morning flight to Lukla. You will then follow the classic EBC trail until you reach Dingboche.
Whenever possible, you will stay in the finest high-end mountain lodges available in the Everest region that will offer you a private attached bathroom with a hot running shower.
You will then transition to Island Peak Base Camp (5200 m) through Chhukung. Here, we will provide you with spacious, insulated individual tents, thick mattresses, and a heated dining tent where our professional cook will prepare a fresh, nourishing meal for you.
The main attraction of our Island Peak climbing with helicopter return trip begins early at around 1 AM. After a few hours, you will be standing atop the 6000 m Himalayan peak in Nepal.
After your climb, our private helicopter will meet you directly at Chhukung to take you straight to Kathmandu, which is the second highlight of our Island Peak climbing with helicopter return adventure.
Available to all fit trekkers, this trip is best during the beautiful, bright season of spring, followed by autumn. So, ready to take your first step to the high Himalayan world of Nepal? Book today and enjoy the early bird benefits of our Island Peak climbing with helicopter return trip.
Welcome to Nepal! The vibrant, chaotic energy of Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, will give you an unforgettable introduction to your Island Peak climbing with helicopter return expedition.
Once you are out of the TIA terminal, you will find a Life Himalaya representative and driver standing holding a placard with your name.
They will guide you to our own vehicle, handle your luggage, and then transfer you to your preferred accommodation prearranged before your arrival.
Once all our participating climbers arrive, our lead guide will meet you all and then describe the travel plan of our luxury Island Peak climbing with heli return adventure.
He will also check every single item that you have brought with you and will arrange for the necessary gear renting or purchasing should you miss any.
If there is any time left, you can spend a few moments wandering through the archaeological square of Kathmandu.
We highly suggest you get an early sleep, as our Lukla flight may be redirected to Manthali Airport in Ramechhap due to heavy air traffic congestion, particularly in spring and autumn.
It thus needs a 4 to 5-hour-long road journey towards Ramechhap beginning early around 1 or 2 AM. We have our private vehicle for your transfer to Ramechhap.

HotelToday marks the official beginning of our Island Peak climbing with helicopter return journey. Early in the morning, a small twin otter aircraft will carry us into the sky to Lukla Airport.
As our flight approaches the landing, we will see the 527 m long upward inclined runway of the airport. Our landing will be fast and safe, and as we get off the plane, the cold refreshing mountain air of Kongde Ri will hit us instantly.
Our guide and porters will organize and secure our belongings while we enjoy a hot cup of tea at a local lodge near the Lukla Airport. We will now begin our trekking in the Everest region, which today will take us downward.
We will pass through the small Kani/Gateway at the edge of Lukla, where our permits will be officially registered. We will then make a gentle descent through the alpine forest beside roaring Dudh Koshi (Milk River).
We will walk down through Chheplung, Chaurikharka, Thadokoshi, and Ghat, where the trail will level out right into Phakding, our first mountain home in Everest, beneath Kusum Kanguru.

TeahouseToday, we will engage in some serious vertical climbing on our way to Namche Bazaar, and we will catch our first glimpse of Mount Everest if the weather is on our side.
After we leave Phakding, we will cross and re-cross the white Dudh Koshi River multiple times via high suspension bridges. Then, our trail will wind through dense forests of small villages like Zamfuti, Toktok, Benkar, and Chumoa before we reach the gate of Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo.
Our guide will handle the park permits and registration while we take a short break to hydrate. Now, our trail will drop back down to Jorsalle, where we will stop for a quick lunch.
We will then meet the iconic Larja Dovan (often called the Hillary Suspension Bridge), suspended 130 m high over the confluence of the Bhote Koshi and Dudh Koshi rivers.
Once we step off the bridge, our trail will now dramatically go upward. Ahead is a grueling Namche Hill, where we will have to climb bistarai (slowly).
Around halfway up the climb, we will reach the clearing called the Top Danda/Everest Viewpoint. Here, from the gaps of the trees, we can have the first view of Everest along with the massive ridges of Lhotse and Nuptse.
Now our trail will flatten out where we will pass a police checkpoint. Namche Bazaar is right around the bend, a horseshoe-shaped Sherpa town.
Since we have broken past 3000 m, we will spend two nights in Namche for better acclimatization.

Our trail will climb steeply right out of Namche for around an hour, when we will reach the flat airstrip of Syangboche.
A gentle trail from here will now lead us to the hotel, where we will sit on the terrace and see radiant views of Everest, Lhotse, Changtse, Samdur, Kangtega, Thamserku, Kongde Ri, and the stunningly beautiful shape of Ama Dablam.
After lunch at Namche, we will then hike to the hill near the army camp and explore the Sherpa culture museum. Right next to the museum, we can also see the life-sized bronze Tenzing Norgay Memorial Statue.
We can then spend a few hours in places like the Cafe De 8848 or The Bakery and watch a documentary on Everest while sipping an espresso.

HotelAfter we leave Namche Bazaar, our trail will climb slightly around the mountainside. This part is often called the Khumbu Highway, where the towering peaks of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam reveal their beautiful faces.
After around 2 hours of trekking, we will pass through Kyanjuma and reach Sanasa, where the trail splits: one leading to Gokyo and the other down to the river.
Now, our route will be steeply descending, dropping us around 300 m in an hour. We will reach the bank of Imja Khola from where we will ascend vertically and reach Phungi Thenga (3250 m).
After hydrating ourselves and eating lunch, we will cross the high suspension bridge over Imja Khola. Then, we will climb continuously for around 2 to 3 hours and reach the gateway of Tengboche.
Here, we will explore for a while the Dawa Choling Gompa, famously known as Tengboche Monastery before settling in our warm teahouse.

TeahouseCompared to previous days of our Island Peak climbing with helicopter return expedition, today will be a relatively short hike, but it will be quite demanding due to the high altitude.
After leaving Dingboche, our trail will head eastward through the Imja Valley. Ahead, we can see the massive open views of Ama Dablam and the south wall of Lhotse.
Island Peak will also come into our view as we keep moving forward. After a moment, we will descend slightly and cross a small stream fed by the melting ice of the Nuptse and Lhotse glaciers.
We will now climb along the terminal moraine of the glacier and reach the small seasonal settlement of Chhukhung. After we eat our lunch here, we can climb a short distance up the ridge of Chhukhung Ri (5546 m), then descend to rest at our lodge.

TeahouseToday, we will enter a full-scale Island Peak climbing with helicopter return expedition environment. After we leave Chhukung, we will ascend along the lateral moraine of the Imja Glacier.
Be careful, as the path will be dry, dusty, and covered with loose rocks. We will be hiking directly beneath the massive south face of Lhotse. After around 3 to 4 hours, we will arrive at Island Peak Base Camp.
Here, our kitchen and camp crew will set up very colorful and bright tents for us. We will then enjoy our hot lunch and then get busy in short climbing training session with our Sherpa climbing guide.
We will learn how to use jumar, rappelling/abseiling, crampon footwork, and rope safety techniques. After training, we will eat our dinner early and get into our sleeping bags by 7 pm.

TentsFinally, we have reached the defining day of our Island Peak climbing with helicopter return. We will wake up in the freezing predawn of 1 AM and grab a quick high-energy breakfast.
Then, we will layer ourselves with warm clothing and gear and switch on our headlamps. We will head west and climb a steep rocky trail, which will head upward around 800 m steeply, taking us to the High/Advanced Camp of the summit.
Now, our trail will pass through loose scree and challenging stone steps leading us to the Crampon Point (5500 m). The terrain from here now turns into solid ice, so we will gear up with our harnesses, crampons, and ice axes.
We will now use the ropes to traverse the crevassed glacier fields. Soon enough, we will reach the base of the 100-meter headwall, which is a steep, 45-to-50-degree snow and ice slope.
Here, we will use fixed ropes and ascenders (jumars) and keep progressing to arrive finally onto the narrow, highly exposed summit top of Island Peak.
Our effort will be rewarded with the massive close-up views of Lhotse’s massive south wall, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Cholatse, Thamserku, Pumori, Baruntese, Everest, and Makalu.
After achieving this great feat, we will now rappel down the headwall and re-traverse the glacier. We will descend to the Base Camp, take a brief rest, and continue our descent to reach the warm settlement of Chhukung.

TentsAfter all the hard works that we have put in our Island Peak climbing with helicopter return expedition, it is now time for us to enjoy the ultimate comfort of a direct helicopter flight to Kathmandu.
We will eat our final mountain breakfast in Chhukung, after which we will proceed to the village helipad. After a quick briefing and weight check, we will board our heli and fly high in the Khumbu sky.
Watching Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, and the Imja Glacier, we will fly over colorful houses of Namche Bazaar and reach Lukla. In Lukla Airport, we may stop for around 10 to 15 minutes for refueling.
Resuming our flight, we will proceed towards the greenery of Kathmandu and land at the domestic terminal of TIA. Our private transfer will wait at TIA to transfer us straight back to our hotel in the capital.
In the evening, we will enjoy our well-deserved celebration with fantastic traditional Nepali dinner hosted by Life Himalaya Trekking.

As on your arrival day, our representative and driver will accompany you to TIA and see you off with a promise to see you soon in Nepal for your next adventure.
The best seasons for Island Peak climbing with helicopter return are the windows opened during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons in Nepal.
The benefit of these two seasons are their offerings of clear visibility and low wind speeds, which are crucial for helicopter fly-out, particularly from Chhukung to Kathmandu.
Among spring and autumn, spring is the climber’s favorite as the snow on higher altitudes becomes more compact and stable, allowing for excellent crampon traction necessary for the headwall and summit ascent of the peak.
Autumn is the second favorite among climbers, which also offers highly stable and dry weather necessary for high altitude helicopter flights. Also, you will have the exceptional visibility of all the high Himalayas of the Everest region.
Winter (December to February) offers very beautiful, clear skies, but the season is also characterized by sub-zero temperatures and violent high altitude winds, so extra caution is needed if you choose to climb the Island Peak in this season.
As for monsoon/summer between June and August, heavy rains, thick fog, and dense clouds can often be the factors for flight delays or cancellations. The climbing route will also be riskier due to increased rockfall and avalanches.
Island Peak is categorized as a 2B summit with an alpine grade of PD, indicating that climbing the summit is a semi-technical and slightly challenging expedition.
The challenges that may occur during our luxury Island Peak climbing are:
Therefore, our Island Peak climbing with helicopter return adventure requires true physical strength, basic mountaineering skills, and excellent mental resilience.
Although we have made our Island Peak climbing with helicopter return an elite and high-end adventure with maximum comfort and efficiency, reducing the physical strain, this doesn’t change the fact that Island Peak is not a walk-up peak.
There still remain a few technical sections on the way to the summit that will test your endurance and basic mountaineering skills. Some of those technical challenges that this summit throws in your way are:
On the way to the Island Summit, you will have to navigate the vertical slope of the Imja Glacier using rope, crampons, and an ice axe.
The depth of the crevasses depends on the season you choose to climb the summit. However, they are still there, which you need to traverse using the aluminium ladder while wearing crampons. This task needs excellent mental composure, balance, and surefooting.
This is the main technical section of the Island summit, which stands as a sharp vertical 100 m wall of ice and snow inclined at a 45 to 60 degree angle.
For tackling this section, you need to use a jumar and fixed ropes, for which you must have strong upper body and core strength.
The next technical challenge is the summit tip itself, which is a narrow, exposed, knife-like ridge. Here, you must have a steady footing and be able to cope with the crisp mountain wind.
Equally difficult and technical is the long descent from the summit top. Once again, you will have to rappel down the headwall and re-traverse the sheer wall of Imja glacier to reach the base camp of the Island Peak.
Our luxury Island Peak climbing with heli return is no doubt a slightly difficult mountain expedition. But with the combination of luxury and helicopter return, this has made this expedition accessible and achievable to all fit trekkers and beginner climbers.
However, you must have already engaged in Annapurna, Everest, or other multi-day mountain treks in Nepal. If you have basic mountaineering skills for using the necessary gear, it will be an added advantage.
Our Sherpa climbing guide will provide a mandatory pre-climb training session when you are at Island Peak Base Camp. So if you are looking to experience the thrill of a 6000 m Himalayan peak in Nepal, then our Island Peak climbing with helicopter return expedition is made for you.
Even if you are busy, the program will fit your schedule perfectly as you will be bypassing the strenuous return trek to Lukla with our helicopter, taking you back straight to Kathmandu from Chhukung.
However, if you are highly sensitive to high altitude, cannot cope with multi-day hikes, are afraid of flying, and have a serious illness related to the heart and lungs, then you must have a medical consultation before joining our Island Peak climbing with helicopter return expedition.
The probability of developing AMS during our Island Peak climbing with helicopter return is high, which is estimated between 50 and 70 percent even after following the standard acclimatization plan (rest days in Namche and Chhukung).
The mild symptoms of AMS usually occur during the ascending section of the summit. First, you will be trekking through 4000 to 5000 m altitude of the Khumbu Valley, then you will cope with the physical exertion when climbing the 100 m vertical Headwall of the summit.
Thus, the thin Himalayan air and less oxygen can cause mild symptoms of AMS such as headache, fatigue, nausea, and drowsiness. However, you will be flying directly back to Kathmandu from Chhukung, which means you will be at sea level in under an hour.
This return will therefore immediately vanish the AMS symptoms due to high oxygen levels.
So, if you want to keep the AMS occurrence as close to 0 percent, then you must gradually ascend, drink a minimum of 4 liters of water when trekking and climbing, integrate lemon and garlic into your daily diet, keep away from alcohol and sleeping pills, and, under medical advice, use Diamox.
Rest assured, our Sherpa climbing guides are well-trained on AMS and first aid treatment, while our crew will also be carrying supplemental oxygen to administer when needed.
Kindly understand that Island summit, although a trekking peak, its ascent still requires serious physical strength, semi-technical skills, and sharp mental readiness.
Thus, to ready yourself for this serious Himalayan expedition, you must have the following training and preparation that should begin 3 to 6 months before your luxury Island Peak climbing expedition:
Depending on your time availability, fitness level, budget, and acclimatization preferences, you can add various extensions and variations to your Island Peak climbing with helicopter return expedition. Some of the options that we suggest are:
