Overview of Rolwaling and Pachermo Peak Climbing

The Rolwaling and Pachermo Peak Climbing Expedition takes you to a Himalayan Valley in east-central Nepal. The remote region of Rolwaling houses massive mountain ranges that display scenic views of Gaurishankar (7,145m) and Melungtse (7,181m). This journey offers authentic climbing and trekking experience of the Himalayas.

The trekking route and region are isolated and peaceful, with little Western influence. There are a plethora of natural phenomena surrounding the rural domain. Glaciers, icefalls, and breathtaking crevasses make up for a spine-chilling adventure. Some of the main attractions of this expedition are the Village of Na and Tro Rolpa Lake.

This high altitude and remoteness of the Rolwaling region make this expedition slightly hard. There are broken glaciers and steep crevasses on the way to the summit. As this region is tucked deep into east-central Nepal, there aren’t many trekkers and climbers visiting Rolwaling. Most of the route consists of steep climbs through thick and lush forests that lead to mountainous views.

It is a tranquil journey that displays the cultural and natural richness of the lap of Gaurishankar. There are traditional villages with authentic lifestyles and no Western influence. The highest point of this adventure stands at 6,187m, the Parchamo Mountain. Later in this adventure, there are other beautiful points of attraction like Namche Bazaar. It is a town at the base of the Everest region that exudes Sherpa culture and lifestyle. The end of this journey ties your experience to the Everest region.

Rolwaling and Pachermo Peak Climbing - Essential Information

Among many peaks in Nepal The Pachermo Peak Expedition is a strenuous climb. The path leading up to the ridges is slightly demanding, but the main challenge is the crevasses and structures leading up to the peak. It requires physically and mentally strong individuals with some trekking experience. It isn’t necessary, but it’ll help the experience. The climbing isn’t technical, so our guides will train you to use your gear efficiently.

Our Pachermo peak climbing instructors are qualified locals with government credentials. You will receive climbing instruction and training from professionals during and before the camp. They have a lot of experience and are familiar with the conditions and routes. The climbing guides are amiable and will provide extensive support in case of difficulty. However, don’t forget to bring all of the required equipment.

You can acquire highly discounted prices for group treks. The itinerary is also customizable if you require extra days or facilities. We recommend you go through this guide on the Peak Climbing in Nepal equipments list that is necessary for this climbing expedition. Make sure to mention any medical conditions or injuries you have during the briefing session.

Best Season

We suggest spring and autumn seasons for the best experience in our Rolwaling and Pachermo Peak Climbing tour. During the months of September, October, and November, the sky turns deep blue as the monsoon period passes. The sun is radiant and the mountain views are clear with a pleasant temperature of 25 degrees Celsius. The 6 to 7 hours of walk and sometimes even 8 hours of hike becomes more agreeable.

During March, April, and May, the monsoon period is still at bay. The days are sunny, and the temperature increases mildly reaching 28 to 32 degrees Celsius. The mountain views are still clear, and the rhododendrons and other wildflowers flower magnificently.

In the summer months of June, July, and August, the humidity in the air increases causing heavy rainfall in the region. The trails are slippery and infested with leeches with the risk of landslides and avalanches in high altitudes.

Likewise, in the winter months of December, January, and February, the heavy snowfalls at the high altitude of Tashi Lapcha Pass can make it impassable. However, the weather will be very clear and the mountain visibility will be excellent. Similarly, crossing the steep slopes at the inclination of 45 to 50 degrees can be quite challenging.

Difficulty

The Rolwaling and Pachermo Peak Climbing trek is a difficult and challenging high-altitude trek in Nepal with each day requiring 6 to 7 hours of hike. Some days may even need you to hike for 8 to 9 hours and climb or descend the steep slopes especially when you trek to Chugima, Tashi Lapcha Pass.

In addition, climbing the Pachermo Peak requires you to use crampons, and jumar grips and move along the fixed ropes set by our guide. He will assist you in your every step, still being independent when using crampons and fixed ropes is beneficial. The guide may not be able to attend to all the trekkers at the same time.

Therefore possessing the prior experience of hiking and climbing can be a bonus when undertaking this trek. If you are capable of walking long hours with a backpack, this trekking is accessible to anyone with good physical health.

In addition, you should also have a strong mindset as you may face some discomfort in accommodation during the Pachermo Peak Climbing. You may also confront some hostile weather conditions which can cause fatigue, stress, and mood disorders.

Therefore, you must have regular and clear communication with group members and your guide to avoid any conflicting situation. You should be able to enjoy the good humor and should be tolerant and respectful.

Altitude Sickness

Our 18-day Rolwaling and Pachermo Peak Climbing trek will take you to some of the highest elevated regions of Nepal. From the start of the trek, you will be constantly gaining altitude walking 5 to 7 hours a day. You will attain an altitude of more than 5000m when you cross the Tashi Lapcha Pass. You will then be at more than 6000 m altitude as you stand at the summit of Pachermo.

Therefore, feeling headaches, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, and fatigue are common. These are the common mild symptoms of altitude sickness which gradually disappear as the body adapts to the greater heights.

The key to avoiding altitude sickness is to keep a constant and slow rhythm, not rushing to pass certain altitude thresholds. And remember to hydrate yourself properly, and don’t go to high altitudes untrained. Try to drink at least one additional liter of water for every thousand meters traveled.

Likewise, your body is making more effort than usual, so make sure you’re eating properly, even if you’re not hungry. Fibers and carbohydrates help you a lot. And most importantly, listen to your body. Every trip has built-in rest days and you don’t have to be afraid to enjoy them.

As for treatment for altitude sickness, the easy treatment is to descend to a lower altitude. Over-the-counter medications can help relieve symptoms such as Ibuprofen and Diamox.

What to expect?

During the 18 days of Pachermo Peak Climbing, we will take you to the isolated and unspoiled region of Rolwaling- still away from many trekkers even in peak trekking and climbing season. The trail leading us to the destination of our trek will cross through numerous astonishing villages of Sherpas embellished with colorful prayer flags, mani walls, and chortens.

We will walk through dense jungle, oak, birch, and rhododendron forests. We will spend the night in Beding- the religiously and historically important village. It is the village where Guru Padma Sambhava secluded himself to meditate in a cave.

We will then move further to the higher village of Na Gaon where we will enter the glacial universe of the high Himalayas surrounded by jagged ridges and rocky walls. We will stay in tented camps at Tashi Lapcha Camp and enjoy an unforgettable moment at sunset over the high peaks of the Khumbu region.

We will then ascend to the peak of Pachermo from where we will witness the 360-degree display of Cho Oyu, Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu as well as the entire Khumbu area. After the peak, we will enter the Khumbu Valley, the shadow of Mount Everest, through Namche Bazaar.

Namche is a perfect site to observe the vivid blend of ancient Buddhist culture with Western tourism. You will then return to Kathmandu by small plane from Lukla. You will also get the opportunity to rejoice in the beautiful chaotic environment of Kathmandu Valley.

Overall, away from the crowds, this trek will reconnect us with authentic Nepal, with its smiling and hospitable people.

The next day, as you depart for your home, our driver will receive you at your hotel and drive you to the airport hereby winding up our service.

Rolwaling and Pachermo Peak Climbing - FAQs

Can I skip climbing Pachermo Peak on this trip?

Yes, on the 12th day of our itinerary, we have set aside a climbing day to Paccehrmo Peak. If you are feeling well or energized to climb the peak, you can simply rest at the Base Camp and wait for the arrival of the climbing party.

What about drinking water during the trek?

During your stay in the lodges, you can always request for boiled water. We don’t suggest buying mineral water bottles as much as possible for we believe in eco-friendly tourism. For camp trips, boiled water will always be available to you to fill the bottles. Or, you can always carry water purification tablets or water purifiers for safe and quick access to clean drinking water.

Do I need climbing training for your Pachermo Peak Climbing?

The climbing section to the peak does require the basic knowledge of using crampons, ice axes, and moving along the fixed rope. Our climbing guide who will accompany you on this trek will give you the necessary training before summitting the peak. Still, if you have some training before you join this trek, it will be an added advantage.

Can I climb any other peak along with Pachermo Peak?

Yes, if you have climbing experience, and a few more days to spend in Nepal, you can go for Ramdung Go ( 5,930 meters) and Pachhermo Peak Climbing. This tour will take you 25 days to complete.

Can I only go for the Rolwaling Valley trek?

Yes, if you are short of time, we also offer a 12-day Rolwaling Valley trek as well. This trek will take you through the similar paths as we take during our Pachermo Peak Climbing. We will not cross the high Pass but only explore the Tso Rolpa Lake then we will make our way back to Kathmandu.
