Manaslu Short Trek vs Manaslu Circuit Trek

1. Trek Difficulty

A short Manaslu Circuit Trek is more difficult than a normal one because you will reach a higher altitude faster. There are no acclimatization days in the itinerary, which might lead to altitude sickness if not trained well.

Manaslu Circuit Trek is less difficult than the shorter version. You will get enough chances to do acclimatization and side hikes during the rest of the days.

2. Rest Days

Manaslu Short Trek has to complete a full circuit in shorter days so that you will get fewer rest days during the trek. There are longer walking days, so it will be completed quickly.

Manaslu Circuit Trek has a proper itinerary with rest days during the trek. These rest days are essential for allowing the body to adapt to the thin air. This helps to reduce the risk of altitude-related health issues.

3. Sightseeing in Kathmandu

You will not be able to do sightseeing in Kathmandu on the short Manaslu Circuit Trek. You have to increase the days on the itinerary if you are willing to do sightseeing in Kathmandu.

In summary, the Manaslu Short Trek is best if you have limited time and prefer a more challenging trek. In comparing both treks, you have to be more physically and mentally fit to complete the Short Trek.

On the other hand, if you have more time, seek a more immersive experience, and are prepared for a moderately challenging trek with higher altitudes, the Manaslu Circuit Trek offers a more comprehensive journey with diverse landscapes and cultural experiences. Consider your fitness level, trekking experience, and the type of adventure you’re seeking when making your decision.

Internet and charging facilities

Nepali SIM cards are easily accessible for purchase in Kathmandu. A copy of your passport and two tiny photos of yourself will be enough. You will receive your SIM card after filling out a form and paying less than a dollar. In locations with strong network signals, these cards will perform excellently. WiFi will be useful if you hike up to higher altitudes. Consider that you may be charged between $2 and $3 for WiFi if the data package on your SIM card is malfunctioning.

Charging your electronic devices can be a bit challenging along the trail. Charging facilities are limited and mostly available in larger villages. Some teahouses or lodges may offer charging, but it could come with an extra cost. It is suggested that you bring a power bank with your charging cable for backup. Power outages are normal, especially in bad weather or other unplanned events.

Is Manaslu Short Trekking a Difficult journey?

The Manaslu short Trek is a wonderful yet demanding journey. The trek will draw for those who are looking for close encounters with towering mountains and high-altitude passes. It is crucial to remember, however, that there are no simple ways into the Manaslu region. In terms of difficulty, the Manaslu short trek falls into the medium to slightly difficult level on several sections of the route.

Many thrill-seekers are drawn to the Manaslu Circuit Trek because behind every obstacle is the reward of a precious and once-in-a-lifetime experience. This journey will be an unforgettable adventure that leaves a lasting memory of stunning scenery and a rich and unique culture.

You will also be able to encounter incredible wildlife and moments of serenely in ancient monasteries. Despite the difficulties in Dharmasala and Lakrye La, there is no other reason to panic during the trek. Anyone with a minimum level of fitness and adequate preparation can go on and conquer this wonderful trek and immerse in the wonders of the Manaslu Circuit.

Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization

The Manaslu short trek includes an ascent to an amazing altitude of 5,106 meters above sea level. Such high altitudes might have challenges associated with decreasing oxygen levels. While trekking below 3,000 meters poses no problems in encountering low oxygen levels.

Higher altitude travel needs to be at a moderate and steady pace. At such a high altitude you will also be able to take constant water. As you ascend higher there is a chance of increasing the likelihood of getting Acute mountain sickness (AMS).

Some of the symptoms include dizziness, headaches, muscle aches, and nausea. Mild cases can be treated with rest and Diamox, as well as adequate fluid intake of water, tea, and soup.

However, it is necessary to descend to a lower level and seek medical attention if the AMS worsens. Our team is dedicated to preventing such conditions from worsening and carrying out security measures. In severe cases, we can also arrange air evacuation.

It is critical not to underestimate AMS; if left untreated, it can be fatal. Our carefully planned itinerary will help reduce altitude-related difficulties, which assures a pleasant trekking experience. The itinerary’s pace provides for gradual acclimatization, which allows your body to adjust to lower oxygen levels at higher altitudes.

Required Permits for Manaslu Trekking

Heading to the far-off Himalayas in Nepal can be tough, and dealing with paperwork is a big part of it. When you plan to visit Nepal, remember that trekking in various areas needs specific permits.

1. Restricted area permit

You need a special permit to go to Jagat until you reach Sama Gaun. To get this permit, go to Kathmandu before your trek. Your trekking agency will handle all the paperwork, so you don’t need to worry.

The permit cost for the Manaslu area from September to November is $100 per person for the first seven days between Jagat and Dharapani. If you want to stay more than 7 days then you will have to pay an extra $15 per person per day. In the off-season, from December to August, the permit cost is $25 less than in the peak season, and after seven days, it’s $10 per day.

2. Manaslu conservarion area

All the different plants and animals in the Manaslu short trek are protected in the Manaslu Conservation Area. The protected zone begins at Philim, and the permit you need to enter costs $30 for each person. If you’re from a SAARC country, it’s Rs 600, and for Nepalese people, it’s free. This money helps take care of the wildlife in the area.

3. Annapurna conservation area

As we continue our trek past Sama Gaun and Dharapani, we’ll enter the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP). Even though we’ll only be in this area for a short time, it’s essential to have a permit if you’re passing through the Dharapani check-post.

Getting the Annapurna Conservation Area permit costs about the same as the permit for the Manaslu Conservation Area. Many trekkers heading to Manaslu also extend their journey to explore Tsum Valley, a stunning highland paradise with beautiful alpine scenery.

Permit Checkpoints and required documents

You would be required to show a restricted area permit at Jagat, and the last checkpoint is in Sama Gaun. The Manaslu conservation area starts at Philim, but they will check the permit in Jagat. As the last part of our journey, beyond Sama Gaun and Dharapani, we will travel to the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP). This is a compulsory permit for you to cross the Dharapani check-post.

Also, a restricted area permit can only be issued by a government-registered trekking company. You should also take a government-licensed trekking guide in the restricted area. Insurance for the guide and other staff during the trek is compulsory.

Equipment

It’s important to have the right gear when you plan for the Manaslu Short Trek. It is important to wear full hiking boots because they support your legs and keep your feet from sliding around. This is especially important in tricky places like the Larkye Pass, where it gets snowy and icy. As a way to improve your grip, it is good to wear hiking spikes.

A strong, waterproof backpack, layers of clothes for different temperatures, a warm sleeping bag, and a reliable hiking pole to help you keep your balance on rough trails should be your basic gear.

Bring a hat with a broad brim, sunglasses, and sunscreen to stay safe in the sun. You need to have a good rain jacket and pants because the weather can change quickly at higher altitudes.

Remember to bring a fully equipped first aid kit with your own medicines, water-purifying tablets, and a water bottle. Bring a headlamp or flashlight to help you find your way in the dark.

Bring energy snacks with you, like energy bars and trail mix. These snacks help you to keep your energy up. Bring a detailed map and a guidebook with you to make sure you don’t get lost.

Food and Accommodation during the Manaslu short trek

As much as we would love the beautiful mountain scenery while trekking, no scene will give you energy if food and accommodation are suitable. Besides, food and accommodation are basically the most essential aspects of trekking. Without good food and proper accommodation, the preparation and training will not be helpful. If you are not eating healthy food and getting proper sleep, then there is no point in other preparations at the correct time.

Foods and accommodations on the Manaslu short trek are similar to what you find on Nepal’s other popular treks; however, options are more varied. World cuisines like pizza, burgers, pasta, and burritos are popular in this route alongside Nepali foods like momo, dal bhat, soups, etc.

As you go to higher altitudes, the choice of foods will be limited. Food and accommodation during the Manaslu trek are always more costly than in Kathmandu.

These accommodations typically offer simple but cozy rooms with basic amenities such as beds, blankets, and shared bathrooms. The hospitality of the local people adds a warm touch to your stay. The higher altitudes bring more rustic accommodations and fewer luxuries for an authentic mountain experience.

Solo or Group Manaslu Short Trekking

One of Nepal’s most famous off-the-beaten-path treks is the Manaslu short trek. You have to pass through the restricted area, Manaslu and Annapurna Conservation Area. Many hikers want to climb Manaslu alone, but trekking to Manaslu alone is entirely prohibited. The government of Nepal has strictly prohibited trekking alone in the Manaslu region in order to protect trekkers from potential danger by providing proper protection through Manaslu tour guides and porters.

It is impossible to hike alone during the Manaslu short trek. Hiring an experienced guide is the only way to ensure the safety of your trip and improve your walking experience. For the private trip, the minimum number of people needed is 2, and the maximum has no limit. The Nepalese government has established a limited area without a guide in order to preserve the ethnic groups and their traditions in this region. So, you need a government-certified guide if you want to pass through the restricted area in the Manaslu Region.

Tsum Valley, Larkya La, and Manaslu Base Camp, along with six other VDCs, are just a few of the restricted areas in the Manaslu region. So, you will need the licenses to explore all of these regions. Hiring a knowledgeable guide with a registered trekking company is required to acquire the restricted area permits for the Manaslu short trek.

Trek preparation for the Manaslu short trek

Begin by building endurance through regular cardiovascular exercises like hiking, jogging, and cycling. Strengthen leg muscles with uphill and downhill training.

Acclimate to high altitudes by incorporating elevation gain in your training and, if possible, spend time at higher altitudes before the trek. Develop a consistent fitness routine in the months leading up to the trek to enhance stamina.

Familiarize yourself with the trek itinerary, considering acclimatization days and side treks. Stay updated on weather conditions and be prepared for diverse terrains.

Lastly, mentally prepare for the challenges and joys of the trek. Embrace the cultural differences, stay hydrated, and maintain a positive mindset. Adequate preparation ensures a safe and enjoyable experience in the stunning landscapes of the Manaslu Short Trek

Transportation Options For The Manaslu Short Trek

To start the Manaslu short trek, many people take a bus from Kathmandu to Machha Khola. The bus leaves around 7 AM from Gongabu Bus Park and covers about 158 kilometers. The roads are good until Arughat, but after crossing Ankhu Khola, it gets bumpy. The bus ride takes 8-9 hours.

Another option is hiring a private jeep from Kathmandu to Machha Khola. These comfortable jeeps with air conditioning take 5-6 hours and provide a smoother ride. There are two types of jeeps: one with a tourist number plate (green) and another with a red plate. It’s better to choose the tourist plate with fewer stops.

Hiring a private jeep has the advantage of stopping anywhere for a break.

For the return from Dharapani to Besi Sahar, many budget-conscious travelers prefer shared public jeeps. It’s a cost-effective way to share the experience while traveling through tough terrain.

You can take a bus or a private jeep while returning to Kathmandu Valley. The bus ride is 5-6 hours, and a private jeep is a bit faster. The roads are generally good, but there might be some traffic jams before reaching Kathmandu.
