Overview of Annapurna Expedition
Annapurna (8,091) is an enormous Himalayan massif, the tenth highest mountain in the world. In 1950, it became the first 8,000 meter mountain to be successfully climbed. It is located east of a great gorge cut through the Himalaya Mountains by the Kali Gandaki River, which separates it from the Dhaulagiri massif. Annapurna and surrounding area are protected within the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), the first and largest conservation area in Nepal, established in 1986 by the King Mahindra Trust for Nature Conservation. Annapurna Expedition is one of two (with K2) the world’s most dangerous mountain expedition, with a bad fatality to summit ratio. In Sanskrit, Annapurna means “filled of food” and usually translated as goddess of the production. It was first summated by Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal in 1950.
All the routes on the mountain pose severe difficulties and hence it is probably why fewer climbers have reached the summit in comparison to other 80000m peaks. The South Face of Annapurna is relatively free of the terrible avalanche hazards that plague the standard routes on the North Face of the mountain, despite the great difficulty; the South Face is a logical route to the summit of Mt. Annapurna.
The Annapurna Conservation Area is home to several world-class treks, including the Annapurna Circuit, so the Annapurna Expedition has additional benefits of occurring in an extremely spectacular setting, however Annapurna peaks are also the world’s most dangerous mountains to climb. There are four Annapurna’s in the massif as well and Gangapurna and Annapurna South.
The South Face of Annapurna is one of the largest and steepest faces in the world. The stunning views that will captivate you during Annapurna Expedition are Annapurna I (8091m), Annapurna II (7937m), Annapurna III (7855m), Annapurna IV (7525m), Varaha Shikhar (7847m), Dhaulagiri 1 (8163m), Dhaulagiri II (7751m), Nilgiri (6940m), Tukche Peak (6920m), Machhapuchhre (6993m) and more.
