day 02 Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla & trek to Phakding

scary-lukla-airport

Welcome to the land of the Himalayas, Nepal. Your first-day journey begins today. Your day begins with an early departure from Domestic Airport on our private vehicle morning flight to Lukla.

It will take around 35 minutes from Kathmandu to Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla. You’ll introduce yourself at Lukla to your Porters and crew members.

After a short meeting and introduction with the porters, we start our trekking journey through the beautifully paved footpath passing typical Sherpa’s villages, and green valleys along with the Dudh Koshi River until we reach Phakding village.

Information about Lukla Flights

Please know that the Lukla Kathmandu flight will often be subjected to deviation towards the Manthali (Ramechhap) airport from TIA in the event of poor weather, fog, less visibility, or heavy air traffic.

In such cases, you will have to take a 4 to 5-hour-long road trip towards Ramechhap from Kathmandu, so you have to be prepared for the midnight departure.

The same can also happen on your way back after completing the Everest Three High Pass trekking.

This type of change generally occurs in the very busy hiking and mountaineering time of spring and autumn. This system began in 2019 and has been official since October 2022 to reduce flight cancellations and trip delays.

Secondary Route to Everest Three High Passes Trekking

Our Everest three high passes trekking route will slowly unfold in an anticlockwise direction, which is best for those looking for an uncomplicated, simple adventure in Khumbu.

However, if you are capable and have already confronted numerous altitude challenges in the mountains, then you can choose to reach the Everest three high passes via the clockwise route.

This route will let you first confront the Renjo La Pass, then the Cho La Pass, and then the formidable and most difficult Kongma La Pass, which means easier to harder approach.

Why have we chosen the counterclockwise route for your Everest Three High Pass Trekking?

Based on our own experience and the recommendation of numerous hikers, the counterclockwise route to the Everest Three High Passes trek is more comforting, where you will get the following advantages:

Better Adaptation Opportunity

With the counterclockwise route, you will have greater chances of adjusting to the increasing altitude. Before you face the first Everest Pass, you will have already taken two hikes above 5000 m that facilitate your body’s adaptation to high altitude.

For example, we have a climb to the 5050 m high Nagarjung Peak in Dingboche, followed by the optional ascent of the 5550 m high Chhukung Ri in Chhukung Village.

Elevation gain considerations

Another key benefit of the counterclockwise route is the total altitude gain, where this route minimizes the altitude increase, thus making the entire adventure more manageable.

The ascents to Cho La Pass and Renjo La Pass are shorter and less technically demanding, while Kongma La Pass adds approximately 100 meters to the elevation gain, yet the climb is regarded as less difficult.

Existence of Numerous Options

With the counterclockwise route, you will have several options for taking the other adventures in the Khumbu Valley if the settled plan doesn’t go well.

For example, from Gokyo, you can travel directly towards Namche Bazaar without the need to tackle the third pass. Or, you can simply omit the crossing of the Cho La Pass or Kongma La Pass.

More Beauty and Natural Trail

Walking the counterclockwise route will offer you more beauty and more grand views of the entire landscape and the Himalayas. From Renjo La Pass, you will be able to see the entire trek’s beauty, while you will also have the sun shining just behind you, offering you pleasant temperatures for charming trekking.
