Overview of Island Peak Climbing

Island Peak climbing is one of the most attractive and popular treks in the Himalayas of Nepal. Through Island Peak climbing, many trekkers begin their acquaintance with high-altitude climbing. The Island Peak climbing takes you to the heart of Khumbu region, where the Island Peak stands tall at 6189 m. This trip is guaranteed to give you the satisfying experience of conquering one of the six thousand meters high mountains.

It also provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy close-up views of Mt Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, and many more. Island Peal climbing also allows the visitor to get to know the famous Sherpas and their culture in small, cozy towns and villages.

This beautiful art of Nature was named Island Peak in 1953 by British Mount Everest expedition members. They saw a beautiful mountain in the sea of ice from Dingboche, hence the name Island Peak. Although the peak got its name as Imja Tse in 1983, it is still known to the world as Islan Peak. The summit lies in between other two giants, namely Ama Dablam and Lhotse Mountain.

The island peak climbing expedition begins with a flight to Lukla. The trail will take you to the familiar and classic route of the Everest Base Camp trek, following Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Chhukung. From Chhukung, we then trek to the Island Peak Base Camp from where we will conquer the summit.

Island peak climbing is not a challenging expedition. However, being elevated at a height of more than six thousand meters often requires knowledge of using ladders, ropes, and ascenders. Therefore, we have set aside the 10th day of our itinerary to provide you with the pre-climb training. This will make your summiting the peak much easier.

Highlights of Island Peak Climbing

  • Visit Lukla, Namche Bazaar, and Everest Base Camp
  • Climb up to 6000m high altitude in Island Peak Summit
  • From the summit, witness a beautiful scenic view of mountains Amadamlam, Everest, Lhotse, and Cho-Oyu

Pre-climb training and trek from Island Peak Base Camp to High Camp

island peakBefore heading to our trek today, our guide will give us training in peak climbing techniques. He will teach us the proper use of climbing gear such as an ice axe, climbing boots, crampons, harnesses, and so on. He will also teach us how to use ropes for an easy ascend and descent along the peak. It is not mandatory to have this training but training will increase your chance of success in conquering the summit of Island Peak. It will also increase our confidence, and we can fully enjoy our trip.

After a preclimb training, we will now head to the High Camp. The trail to the high Cam will lead us past base camp for several hundred meters before hitting left up the steep slope. Initially sandy, the path soon turns to grass before becoming scattered stone. As we climb the hill, we will see that the slope narrows, and the path enters a steep rock channel.

We will reach the High Camp in about 2 to 3 hours. We will stay at the camp, where we will enjoy the cozy dinner and friendly environment with our guide and porter.

We need the rope for the glacier, as it contains several cracks. Our guide will attach a rope when necessary. As we ascend the steep snow slope, we will reach to the summit ridge. As we reach the summit, we can have the dazzling views of Lhotse, Makalu, and Baruntse.

Enjoy the moment, take photographs and videos, and captivate the atmosphere. After spending some time here, we will descend to the Island Peak Base Camp, where we will have our breakfast. Island Peak Climbing - Essential Information

Best season for Island Peak Climbing

Island Peak climbing can be carried out throughout the year. But for the best possible experience and more likelihood of success of the trip, spring, and autumn season are the perfect time for Island Peak Climbing. From March to June, the daytime temperature in the Khumbu region starts to increase, reaching 15 to 18 degrees Celsius. The night temperature can fall to -10 to -12 degrees Celsius.

The trail towards Island Peak offers splendid views of the Himalayas, the forests get rich with luscious vegetation and turn pink and red with the blooming rhododendrons. The forests and landscape become lively with wildlife such as musk deer and snow leopards. The sky brightens with crystal clear visibility with low or no chances of precipitation and avalanches.

Likewise, months from September to early December are characterized by autumn or fall. This post-monsoon period also provides clear scenic views of the Himalayas and villages. The forests and vegetation turn into yellow and red, making the trekking days even more lively and charming. The daytime temperature ranges from 0 to 15 degrees Celsius, and the nighttime temperature falls to -15 degrees Celsius. The 5 to 7 hours of trekking during the day is more pleasant than usual.

The winter season, from late December to February, is also favorable if you seek to do Island Peak Climbing in isolation. Being low trekking season, the trail will be less crowded. The days will be sunny and clear, while nights can be quite colder. Especially during December, the region will be blanketed in heavy snow, making your Christmas dream a reality. With appropriate preparation, equipment, and an experienced guide, you can easily carry out Island Peak Climbing in winter.

However, we do not recommend the months from late June to August, which are considered summer/monsoon season. The paths can be blocked due to landslides, and avalanches. Most of the days will be cloudy with heavy rainfall obstructing your views of the Himalayas.

Island Peak Climbing Difficulty

Island Peak Climbing is a moderately challenging trek favorable for those seeking pre-training before embarking on the Everest Base Camp trek. Based on our itinerary, this trip will take 19 days to complete. We have set aside one or two days for acclimatization and a day for climbing the summit of Island Peak.

During the entire trek, you have to hike for 4 to 8 hours, passing difficult terrains, climbing or descending hills, and steep slopes. And don’t forget about crossing rivers, glaciers and mountain passes. On the day of climbing the summit, you will have to climb for 8 to 10 hours, covering a distance of around 10 miles.

It doesn’t mean you will need mountaineering or climbing experience because we have set aside a day when our guide will provide you with the pre-climbing training. The highest altitude you will gain during this trek is when you climb the Island peak elevated at 6189 m. As your hiking days progress, you will gain more altitude, and you will spend most of your days above 3000 m. The weather in such heights can sometimes be unpredictable, and you have to be prepared for cold weather and snowfall.

However, our government-certified knowledgeable guide will always assist you in ensuring easy trek and success.

Tengboche Everest Himalaya panorama EBC & Island Peak climbing

Altitude sickness in Mera Peak Climb

As mentioned above, during the Island Peak Climbing trek, you will spend most of your days above 3000 m above sea level. Therefore, you may suffer from symptoms of altitude sickness such as dizziness, nausea, headache, and loss of appetite. However, we have planned our itinerary with appropriate rest days so your body can adapt to thin air at high altitudes. We will make good use of the rest day by slowly strolling, climbing, relaxing, and exploring the surroundings. We will ascend and descend slowly without hurrying our pace.

However, if you still feel the above symptoms, you can always inform your guide. He always carries Diamox, a medicine to treat acute symptoms of altitude sickness. In addition, you should always ensure your body is adequately hydrated, so drink at least 3 liters of water. Have garlic soup and ginger tea, and stay away from smoking, alcohol, and overeating.

If the symptoms of altitude sickness are severe, your guide will make the appropriate decision. He will make arrangements for your immediate descent or, if needed, for emergency evacuation.

Travel Insurance for Island Peak Climbing

When you decide to get on board for Island Peak Climbing, remember to purchase appropriate travel insurance that can cover your risks above 3000 m to 6000 m. travel insurance for Island Peak Climbing is a must, and you have to provide a copy of your travel insurance policy before starting this trek. Ensure your policy will cover all your expenses, including medical and hospital bills and emergency evacuation by helicopter.

Island peak Climbing is a trek that involves altitude gain, and crossing challenging terrains, glaciers, and mountains. And the risk of altitude sickness can’t be ignored. Additionally, there can be some unforeseen events; therefore, travel insurance is a must that will take care of your expenses.

Island Peak vs Mera Peak

Island Peak and Mera Peak are both the most popular treks in Nepal; both of the peaks are situated in the Khumbu region. Both of the peaks have been enchanting trekkers since 1953, as both of these peaks had been conquered in the same year. Island Peak and Mera Peak are neighboring mountains separated by a long mountain chain. Both of these peaks stand above 6000 m above sea level: Island Peak is at 6,189 m, and Mera Peak is at 6,476 m.

From the summit of these peaks, you can enjoy the outstanding views of Lhotse, Everest, Makalu, and Barun. In addition, trekkers often opt for these treks as pre-training before embarking on the Everest Base Camp trek. Both of these treks are moderately difficult not requiring prior experience of mountaineering.

Both of these peaks share some similarities; however, they are also different from each other. First, Island Peak, standing at 6189 m, is lesser in height than Mera Peak at 6476 m. however, climbing Mera Peak is much easier than Island Peak climbing. The trail to Mera Peak is pretty straightforward with very few challenges. There are fewer crevasses, no narrow ridges, and difficult terrains.

Whereas the trail to Island Peak needs passing glaciers, passes, crossing rivers, and ascending and descending steep slopes. Therefore, before summiting Island Peak, guides provide pre-climbing training of using ropes, ice axes, ladders, and crampons. For climbing Mera Peak, the use of ropes is needed but not as complex as compared to Island Peak. Therefore, climbing Mera Peaks is less challenging when compared to Island Peak climbing.

There’s no doubt that both Island and Mera peaks are the two gigantic Himalayan jewels of Nepal. With the right preparation, adequate knowledge of terrain and climate, and proper equipment, both of these treks offer unforgettable trekking and climbing experiences.

The cuisine will be healthy, hygienic, and fresh made from the local produce. Till Namche Bazaar, you can delight yourself with a variety of dishes from Nepali to Continental. But in higher altitudes, the food option will be limited but you can enjoy noodles, Momos, potatoes, fried bread, mushroom soup, butter tea, and the staple, Dal-Bhat-Tarkari (lentils, rice, and seasonal vegetables).

Likewise, when you arrive at base camps, we will provide a tented camp, which our team will set up for you. Our tent cooks will prepare fresh, hot meals for you. Our tour package includes a full-on-board meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner) during the trek.

As for your transportation, all our transportation within the city is included in our trek package. We will pick you up at the airport in a private car. We will fly you to Lukla and from Lukla to Kathmandu. During your departure from Nepal, our staff will pick you up from your hotel and will transport you to the airport.
