day 05 Trek from Dole to Machermo

On the fifth day of the EBC Gokyo Chola pass trek, after breakfast, we start trekking towards Machermo. It’s not too difficult to get from Dole to Machhermo. It is essentially a traverse that is slightly uphill and acquires a net elevation of 1,200 feet; for most people, this is a half-day trek that allows for some rest and acclimatization.

However, the view is getting better all the time. Cho Oyu, the fifth-highest mountain in the world at 26,864 feet, begins to loom above you.

Your evening’s destination, Machhermo, isn’t much on its own like Dole. It is located in a small cove, yet a stunning snow-capped peak rises just above it.

Both towns are mainly Sherpa summer farming and pasture towns that have been transformed into rest spots for trekkers. These hillsides will be lush and flower-filled in the summer and monsoon, with yaks grazing there.

day 10 Lobuche Everest Base Camp (5,364 m / 17,598 ft) via Gorakshep

Start your day early from Lobuche, trekking along a rocky moraine path beside the Khumbu Glacier. The trail offers dramatic views of Everest, Nuptse, and Pumori as you make your way towards Gorakshep, the last settlement before Everest Base Camp. The walk to Gorakshep takes about 3 hours, gradually gaining altitude as you pass glacial terrain and occasional icy streams.

After a brief rest and lunch at Gorakshep, continue onward to Everest Base Camp. The trail from here becomes more rugged, winding over glacial debris and loose rocks. Although the elevation makes the trek more demanding, the reward is unmatched — standing at the base of the world’s highest peak, surrounded by ice seracs, Khumbu Icefall, and towering Himalayan giants.

Spend some time taking photos and soaking in the atmosphere before retracing your steps back to Gorakshep for an overnight stay.

It combines the traditional classic Everest Base Camp Trek with excursions to Gokyo Lakes and Chola Pass. Trekking in this region will present you with several challenges along the way. The weather in the Himalayas is unpredictable, and it changes in no time. This increases the risk of trekking in the Himalayas.

The trek involves long days of strenuous uphill ascents and descents in high-altitude conditions. With up to nine days at elevations reaching almost 5500 meters, it is a challenging but rewarding trek offering amazing views of Himalayan peaks and stunning alpine landscapes.
