Views of the Annapurna mountain range and Dhaulagiri mountain range, Village and landscapes are the major attractions of this trek. Khopra Danda Trek is combination of two treks, Ghoprepani and Khopra ridge trek. In ten days, you’ll experience everything of the Annapurna region.

Best Season for Khopra Danda Trek

Being a low-altitude trek in comparison to other treks in Nepal, Khopra Danda can done all year round. But to have the utmost experience of the trek without any obstacles with the magnanimous views, spring and autumn are the best seasons.

March to May mark the spring season, and September to November mark the autumn season. The days during these months offer a perfectly clear sky with unobstructed views of mountains standing miles away. The temperatures ranging between 14 to 26 degrees Celsius are ideal for 4 to 7 hours of hiking and you can hardly expect any rain shower.

In addition, the rhododendron blossom, which can be seen from around the middle of March, has a very special magic. The lush red flowers form an impressive contrast to the snow-capped mountains and blue sky.

From December to February, you can experience very chilly weather with temperatures less than 5 degrees Celsius. In the summer months, from June to August, the area closer to Pokhara can experience heavy rainfall. Muddy trails and leech infestation can be some other problems when trekking in these months.

However, with adequate and right preparation, you can overcome these hurdles and can easily trek Khopra Danda in winter and summer.

Khopra Danda Trek Difficulty

Khopra Danda trek is considered an easy to moderately challenging trek favorable for beginners and trekkers with little hiking experience. Most of the days, you have to hike for 4 to 6 hours. On days when you have to reach Khopra Danda requires approximately 7 hours of hike, and the excursion to Lake Khayer may require 7 to 8 hours of walking.

The maximum altitude gain you will achieve during the entire trek is again when you reach Khopra Danda, which is elevated at 3640 m from sea level, and Lake Khayer, which is at 4500 m above sea level. In addition, you have to overcome steep ascents and descents along the trail. Therefore, a certain level of physical and mental fitness is beneficial to overcome the challenges of this trek.

We recommend you engage in walking, running, swimming, weight lifting, or cycling for 1 to 2 months before embarking on this trek.

Altitude Sickness in Khopra Danda Trek

There is a probability of altitude sickness during the Khopra Danda trek. During the initial phase of the trek, you will be dealing with steep ascents. On the 5th and 6th days, you will be exploring Khopra Danda and Lake Khayer, both standing tall at an elevation more than 3500 m above sea level.

Depending on their physical and mental fitness plus their prior experience of trekking, some trekkers may not feel the altitude sickness at all, while some may go through the mild symptoms of this sickness.

For our safety and to let your body adapt to high altitude, we have scheduled a rest day at Khopra Danda. Still, if you have a headache, nausea, and dizziness, inform your guide and take a pill of Diamox. In case of headache only, you can take paracetamol. If the symptoms persist, your guide may make you descend immediately.

We advise you to drink at least 3 liters of water and frequently urinate. This small measure is the only way to prevent altitude sickness.

What to expect in Khopra Danda Trek?

The Khopra Danda trek takes you off the beaten track through a still-untouched area in the Annapurna region. The tea houses are simpler, the villages more original, as this path has only been opened to tourism since 2012. this trek offers pretty much everything you would expect from a trekking experience in the Himalayas: magnificent mountain panoramas, less-frequented trails, an abundance of untouched nature, and encounters with incredibly friendly mountain dwellers.

On the trail to this trek, you can enjoy the overwhelming view of many of the surrounding 8000 m peaks: Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Dampus Peak, Himchuli, Fishtail, Lamjung Himal and of course the entire Annapurna massif. However, the highlight of this trek is Khopra Danda and Lake Khayer.

The sunrise view from Khopra Danda presents an incomparable panorama of the mountain landscape, such as Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Annapurna South, Annapurna I, and the summit of the holy Mt. Machhapuchhre.

Lake Khayer, on the other hand, is similar to Gosainkunda Lake: religiously important. Many Hindu pilgrims come to Khayer Lake in July/August on the occasion of the Janai Purnima festival. Men of the Brahmin castes change their sacred thread on this holiday, always on the full moon. But the view around the lake also does its part in the other months to give the day a special touch.

In addition, you can have a relaxing hot shower in the natural hot spring of Tatopani when you retrace your steps toward the civilization of Pokhara.

In short, the Khopra Danda trek gives you all: a secluded trek on a less crowded trail enveloped with untouched natural beauty with an introduction to traditional and local customs.
