Nepal Trekking Package with Full Insurance Coverage: A Complete Guide for Safe Himalayan Adventures

Trekking in the mountains of Nepal is certainly an intensely adventurous experience, but it also has some risks associated with it such as altitude sickness, sudden weather changes, remote terrain, and injuries.

This is why travel insurance in Nepal is of utmost importance which acts as your protector during any medical emergencies. Additionally, it also provides you enhanced security if your trip gets canceled, if you lost your baggage or if you need to stay few more days in Nepal.

But the most important feature of travel insurance in Nepal is the financial security that it provides when in need of emergency helicopter evacuations.

However, in recent years, there have been quite a few insurance frauds that have come to the surface. An investigation held by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) in 2025 revealed that a small number of trekking agencies, helicopter operators, and medical facilities have arranged fake or unnecessary helicopter rescues.

They submitted overly priced insurance claims and cheated foreign insurance providers out of around 20 million dollars, causing a negative impact on Nepal’s reputation.

After these incidents came to light, concerned Nepalese authorities, international insurers, and the tourism industry have now introduced stricter regulations to prevent such fraud.

Life Himalaya Trekking is also committed to your safety, and that’s why we are offering you very reliable, genuine, and cost-effective Nepal trekking insurance packages that will not only provide you with security but also protect you from such fraud.

To offer you a better understanding of travel insurance in Nepal, we have formulated this guide. You will learn about choosing the best travel insurance in Nepal, its requirements, cost, coverage, and what this package includes.

Nepal’s Helicopter Rescue Insurance Fraud: What Every Trekker Should Know

Travel insurance in Nepal is a mandatory government requirement when trekking in remote high-altitude mountain regions of Nepal, and helicopter rescue is an important part.

Every year, these rescues have saved countless lives and stranded tourists who have faced serious altitude sickness, injuries, natural calamities, or other medical emergencies in remote Himalayan regions.

However, between 2018 and 2025, fraudulent insurance claims have been uncovered by the international insurance companies and the Nepal Government.

In 2025, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) investigation found certain ways of these rescue frauds. Generally, exhausted trekkers such as to EBC trek are often advised to pretend to be sick, seek helicopter rescue, and claim the insurance.

In some other cases, mild altitude sickness was often framed as a severe issue, so trekkers are tricked into requesting helicopter rescue. In a few cases, physical symptoms for evacuation were induced by adding baking soda to trekkers’ diet.

Additionally, a few of the trekkers were also found to have willingly participated in such fraud.

CIB also discovered that while multiple passengers shared a helicopter flight, the full cost of the flight individually has been claimed from their insurance companies.

Please understand that only a limited number of tour operators, trekking agencies, and hospitals were involved in the case so entire Nepal trekking  and travel industry cannot be blamed.

Following such revelations, Nepal authorities and certified travel and trekking agencies such as Life Himalaya Trekking now follows strict protocols regarding medical helicopter evacuation.

Understanding when Helicopter Rescue is Necessary

Helicopter rescue is a major component of Nepal travel insurance, and you should have a clear understanding of when it is absolutely necessary so you can protect yourself from these frauds.

Generally, a helicopter evacuation is necessary when it is medically required, and there are no other safer and faster ways available in the region you are trekking to get you to the nearest hospital.

The following are the conditions when helicopter rescue is absolutely needed:

  • Severe Altitude Sickness
Altitude sickness is a common physical discomfort you experience during high-altitude trekking in Nepal. Mild to moderate altitude sickness can be effectively managed on the trail with the help of over-the-counter medications like Diamox, along with adequate rest, hydration, and descent. However, if altitude sickness turns serious, and turn into High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), then these conditions can be life threatening. In such event, immediate helicopter evacuation becomes necessary, so that urgent medical treatment can be administered.
  • Serious Injuries
Trekking in the mountains of Nepal also comes with the risk of physical injuries. A loss of footing or a fast ascent can cause falls or accidents resulting in fractures, head injuries, severe sprains, or other traumatic injuries, which may need helicopter transport for immediate medical treatment.
  • Medical Emergencies
In unfortunate health events such as heart attack, stroke, severe infection, allergic reaction, or any other unexpected health crisis, then also helicopter evacuation becomes essential to save your life.
  • Remote Location
Many trekking routes in Nepal, such as Manaslu, Everest, Kanchenjunga, and Dolpo, do not have road access. Since urgent road transport is not possible in these regions, helicopters remain the only option to reach the nearest medical facilities for any health emergencies.

Is Travel Insurance in Nepal Mandatory? What are Nepal Travel Insurance Requirements?

Nepal travel insurance for trekking is not compulsory but it is mandatory for certain restricted areas like Upper Mustang or the Manaslu Circuit. However, all reputable and licensed travel agencies will ask for your insurance policy so to make sure that you are fully protected financially before beginning any remote treks in Nepal.

Therefore, it is important that you obtain travel insurance before starting your trek. When you buy Nepal trekking insurance, you should fully know which one to purchase based on the trip you have chosen.

Not all travel insurance policies will include full coverage suitable for high-altitude trekking in Nepal, and not all will include helicopter rescue costs.

When purchasing your travel insurance, consider following Nepal travel insurance requirements:

  • Must have coverage for High-Altitude Trekking
Generally, common travel insurance plans do not cover trekking altitudes more than 3000 m. However, if you have chosen to trek to Everest Base Camp, Manaslu Circuit, Langtang, or Annapurna, then your policy must include the maximum elevation you will reach during the trek.
  • Confirm Helicopter Rescue Coverage
Helicopter rescue is the most crucial and most expensive component of your Nepal travel insurance. So ensure your policy offers you financial protection if any medical helicopter evacuation is needed during the trek.
  • Medical Expenses Coverage
A right Nepal trekking insurance package should also cover all your medical and hospital bills if any treatment or medical intervention is needed during the trip. Please make sure you have the following medical expenses covered:

    • Emergency hospitalization
    • Doctor consultations
    • Medication
    • Emergency transportation
    • Medical repatriation if necessary
  • Adventure or Extreme Activity Coverage
If your trip in Nepal also includes adventurous or extreme activities such as climbing, mountaineering, mountain biking, motorcycle riding, paragliding, bungee jumping, etc, then you should also mention these activities in your policy.
  • Miscellaneous Protection
Your travel insurance must also include protection for trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or delayed baggage, extended stays, and personal liability. This will give you an added layer of security throughout your journey in Nepal.
  • Understand what coverage is excluded
Read carefully the coverage included in your insurance plan and understand what is excluded from the policy. Pay particular attention to:

    • Pre-existing medical conditions
    • Incidents related to alcohol or drugs
    • Trekking beyond the covered altitude
    • Evacuations that are not medically necessary
    • Third party liability
  • Round the Clock Support
Please make sure that your insurance company offers you 24/7 emergency support and is able to coordinate any emergency situations whenever needed.

Which to choose: Normal or Full Insurance Package?

To choose between a normal or full insurance package, you will have to fully understand your trekking destination, routes, maximum altitude you will reach, level of safety you like to have, and, of course, the budget you like to invest.

If you are trekking along the popular and well-established routes of Nepal such as Annapurna, then you can opt for a normal insurance package.

If your trekking regions have good infrastructure, accessible communication and road services, moderate maximum altitude (up to 5000 m), and you can trek the route without the safety of a tracking device, then a normal insurance package will be best for you.

Also, if you desire comprehensive safety under budget, then this package will offer you what you are looking for during your trek in Nepal.

On the other hand, if you are trekking in very remote mountain regions of Nepal such as Manaslu or Dolpo, then opt for a full insurance package.

Since mobile communication in these locations will be limited or unavailable, your safety will depend fully on the Tracer M3 Satellite Safety Device, which will provide you with live GPS tracking and an SOS emergency feature.

With these features, it will be easier for our rescue teams to quickly locate you and assist you during any emergency conditions.

Also, if you are trekking solo, engaging in long-duration expeditions, and challenging Himalayan routes, then a full insurance package will be beneficial, which will provide you with an additional level of safety during your trek in Nepal.

Helicopter Rescue Process we offer in both Normal and Full Insurance Package

We fully understand that medical emergencies and natural calamities can happen in any mountain trek in Nepal. Therefore, we have included helicopter emergency evacuation in both the normal and full insurance packages according to the terms and conditions of your chosen policy.

Here is the process for how we provide you with immediate rescue in any unexpected emergency events:

  • Medical Assessment
It is important to understand that you cannot request for helicopter transportation or rescue just because you feel tired on the trek.If you are seriously ill or injured, then a licensed medical professional, such as a healthcare worker or doctor will assess your condition. He will determine if your condition can be managed safely on the trail or not, and then only they will recommend helicopter evacuation.
  • Verify Insurance
After recommendation by the medical professional, your guide will then contact us. We will verify your policy, and check for the helicopter evacuation policy in your selected package.
  • Helicopter Dispatch
After verification, we will contact our rescue operator who will then dispatch their helicopter to your location. It will land on the nearest safest landing place where our team will safely carry to the heli for your transport.
  • Transfer to Hospital
The helicopter will now transport you to the nearest advanced medical facilities, usually in Kathmandu or Pokhara. If your policy includes coverage for medical treatment, then we will also take care of your hospital expenses according to the terms of your policy.

Average Nepal Trekking Insurance Cost

Travel insurance cost varies, and it is based on several components. As for our Nepal trekking insurance cost, it depends several factors such as:

  • If you choose the full insurance package, the cost will be a bit higher as it includes the Tracer M3 Satellite Safety Device and additional safety features.
  • If your maximum altitude on the trek is higher, then a premium insurance plan will be needed because of the increased risk on the trek.
  • If your trekking days are longer, then a comprehensive plan will be needed for your enhanced safety, and therefore the price will be higher.
  • Since older travelers face greater health risks as compared to younger trekkers, the insurance cost will be higher for them than for younger travelers.
  • If your trekking destination is farther, higher, wilder, and more remote, then your insurance plan will be more extensive and so is the cost.

Note

Kindly note that the itinerary of every trip and duration can differ, and so no single insurance plan can apply to every trip. Please contact Life Himalaya Trekking to know about all the details regarding the latest insurance rates. We will help you choose the best plan that fits your Himalayan adventure in Nepal.
