Overview of Everest Three Peak Climbing: Mera, Island, Lobuche Peak

Many climbers have the ultimate ambition of conquering any 6000 m Himalayan peak in Nepal. Life Himalaya Trekking will not only meet those ambitions but also offer you something fresh. We present to you the Everest Three Peak climbing expedition, where you will take not one, not two, but three 6000 m peaks in one expedition.

Yes, three 6000 m peaks in our one Everest Three Peak climbing expedition, which is a reality. This adventure will lead you to the Mount Everest region with the aim of summiting Mera Central, Island Peak, and Lobuche East.

All three peaks are outstandingly beautiful, magical, and famed for their exceptional accessibility and considerable height. However, among the three, Lobuche East stands out as a bit complicated and technical than the other two.

Thus, to make your Everest Three Peak climbing expedition a complete success, we offer you the chance to ascend the hardest Lobuche East only after acclimatizing on Mera and Island Peaks.

This approach will enable you to bypass the tedious acclimatization process on the mountain, so all you have to do is climb and reach the three summits. This approach has also reduced the duration of our Everest Three Peak climbing expedition.

During our Everest Three Peak climbing 26 days expedition, our first focus will be on Mera Central (6461 m), gracefully positioned inside the Makalu Barun National Park of the Khumbu Valley. It is one of the most famed and fine-looking trekking peaks, which was conquered on May 20, 1953, by Col J.O.M. Roberts and Sen Tenzing.

Island Peak, on the other hand, at 6165 m in the Khumbu Valley, appears as a lonely island from Dingboche. Thus, Eric Shipton called it Island Peak, and the name remained thereafter.

The peak was conquered in 1953 by a British team prior to an expedition to Mount Everest. The team consisted of C. Evans, A. Gregory, C. Wylie, Tenzing Norgay, and seven Sherpas.

Lobuche East, on the other hand, is located near the famous Everest High Trail at 6119 m. On April 25, 1984, the Lobuche East walls were first climbed successfully by Laurence Nielson and Ang Gyalzen Sherpa.

All three peaks are renowned for their stunning natural vistas made by the grand titans of the Khumbu region, such as Mount Everest, Lhotse, Pumori, Island Peak, Ama Dablam, and many more.

Our Everest Three Peak climbing itinerary commences and ends in Lukla. From Lukla, you will advance towards the 4600 m Zwatra La Pass. You will explore the glacial regions of Mera Base and High Camps, summiting Mera Peak and then heading to Kongma Dingma.

The impressive 5845 m Amphu Lapcha Pass will be on your route, leading you to the Island Summit. After conquering this peak, you will face the challenging Kongma La at 5535 m.

The Everest Three Peak climbing expedition will then guide you to Everest Base Camp at 5364 m and Kala Patthar at 5644 m, where you will see the descending walls of Khumbu Icefall. Your journey will conclude with Lobuche East, followed by a return along the classic Everest trail through Namche and Lukla.

For our Everest Three Peak climbing, you don’t need to be an invincible climber, of course. You will also have the support of our expert local climbing guide. However, our Everest Three Peak climbing expedition is meant for energetic, highly determined, healthy, and seasoned climbers.

So ready to spread your arms in victory three times atop three 6000 m Himalayan monsters of Nepal? Yes, then come with us on our Everest Three Peak climbing expedition and be ready to be tired but elated.

Day 14: Trek to Island Peak Base Camp, 5200 m via Amphu Lapcha Pass, 5,845m/19,163 ft, 8 to 9 hours

Today is one of the toughest days on our Everest Three Peak climbing expedition. Beginning our journey from the Amphu Lapcha High Camp, we will cross steep stretches of rock and ice for around two hours over the glacier.

Climbing ropes and a jumar will be needed to navigate across the two railing sections, after which the trail will now be gentle till we reach the breathtaking pass summit.

At this point, we will unpack our high-altitude gear and utilize a jumar to navigate across the two railing sections. The path then changes into a gentle incline that guides us toward the Pass.

Look at the glowing red profiles of the Chamlang, Hongu Basin,Lhotse, Mera Peak, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Island Peak, and Everest. Now, a steep drop on fixed lines over 20 and 30 m rappel sections awaits.

Now follows a sharp descent of around 4 hours towards Chhukung Village of Everest. A pause, and then the southern track will lead us up for some time.

Turning east, the Imja and Lhotse glaciers will show us our uphill way towards the Island Peak base camp beneath the southwest face of the summit.

Note

If you think the day has been quite long and tiring for you, you can also choose to stay overnight at Chhukung and spend an extra day resting and having some training sessions. While staying for an extra day in Chhukung, you can also opt to practice your climbing skills on Chhukung Ri (5550 m).

Or, another option would be to proceed towards the Island Peak Base Camp and stay one more night here so you can rest and also refine your climbing skills one more time.

Day 15: Summit Island Peak, 6165 m/ 20,305 ft, and Return to Chhukung, 9 hours

Today we will achieve one more 6000 m peak listed on our Everest Three Peak climbing expedition, the Imja Tse or the Island Peak. In the dark, lighting our way with headlamps, we will ascend the rocky path through the rocky gorge leading to the glacial summit pass.

Our guide will secure a rope using crampons and ice axes wherever necessary in the crevasse glacier. The route at first will pass through snow and rocky bands, leading us onto a plateau.

A short, steep snow slope will then direct us to the snout, where we will be equipped with our climbing gear to tackle the 35 to 45 degrees of slope inclination.

Celebrate your second remarkable and proud achievement atop the Island Summit and wave your flag in front of Lhotse, Cholatse, Makalu, Baruntse, and Ama Dablam. We will now steeply descend back through the Island summit base camp to Chhukung comfort.

Day 16: Trek to Lobuche, 4910 m via Kongma-La Pass, 5535 m/18,175 ft, 7 hours

Yet another hardest day ahead, where we will have to win over the most strenuous Pass of the Everest: the Kongma La. The trail to the north will head over the Nuptse glacier first.

We will then ascend the village slopes of Bibre and get inside the remote Nyiang Valley, graced by the presence of Chhukung Ri and Pokalde. The trail will move west, ascending for around 3 to 4 hours towards the mountain lakes.

The Kongma La Pass slope begins from here, and once over, we will find ourselves between the gigantic presence of Kongma Tse and Pokalde. Nuptse, Gauri Shankar, Lobuche, Makalu, Pumori, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Everest will be watching us over as we slowly plunge down the pass towards Khumbu Glacier.

This massive glacial trail will eventually advance us to Lobuche, from where we will be approaching the third and final summit on our Everest Three Peak climbing expedition.

Everest Three Peak Climbing: Mera, Island, Lobuche Peak Trip Information

Upgrade Accommodation in Kathmandu

Please be informed that we also offer an upgraded accommodation option in Kathmandu, where you can choose from a typical three-star hotel to more extravagant four or five-star hotels.

You can opt for a double room, single room, deluxe room, or suite based on your preference. Please be aware that an additional surcharge will be applied based on your choice.

Upgrade Lukla Helicopter Flight

We also offer you an exciting helicopter ride option to Lukla from Kathmandu, or vice versa, and you can even choose a round trip both at the start and conclusion of our Everest Three Peak climbing expedition.

You will have the choice to opt for a shared helicopter or a private helicopter ride. A shared helicopter option will be more economical than the private option.

Best Season for Everest Three Peak Climbing Expedition

Our Everest Three Peak climbing expedition will not only challenge you with the astounding towering heights of Mera Central, Island, and Lobuche East, but also with the three passes of Amphu Lapcha, Zwatra La, Mera La, and Kongma La.

Therefore, our advice for you would be to take the Everest Three Peak climbing expedition only in the spring of March, April, and May, and the autumn of September, October, and November.

The spring temperature will be around 25 degrees Celsius, while the autumn temperature will be around 20 degrees Celsius. You will also have the clearest path and constant climate available with less speedy wind and perfect visibility.

The considerable weather challenge of December, January, and February, extreme cold, thick snow hiding the crevasses, heavy snowfall, and the heavy avalanches and thunderstorms of June, July, and August make them unfavorable months for this expedition.

Everest Three Peak Climbing 26 Days Expedition Difficulty level

Mera Peak presents a 1B alpine risk, Island Peak a 2B, while Lobuche East offers a PD+ challenge. Individually, all three peaks are moderate peaks with less technicality, thus accessible even to new climbers.

However, we have combined three peaks along with the crossings of Mera La, Amphu Lapcha, Zwatra La, and Konga Ma La passes, with a side trip to EBC and Kala Patthar.

Thus, overall, our Everest Three Peak climbing 26 days expedition is an extreme mountain adventure with the real risk of altitude sickness. Therefore, our expedition best suits those who have already reached any 6000 m peak in Nepal.

Most Technical and Hardest Section of Mera, Island, and Lobuche Peaks

Mera Peak

Mera Peak, although a pretty simple and non-technical hiking peak, also contains some semi-technical sections that will be quite hard to overcome.

One such section is crossing of the Mera Glacier, where the deep crevasses may lie hidden. Also, right before the summit, there will be a glacial dome where the usage of ice axes, crampons, and fixed rope may be needed.

Island Peak

For Island Peak as well, you must have a good knowledge of the glacier crossing, where you will have to utilize the fixed ropes. However, the most technical challenge would be to overcome the 100 m steep Ice Headwall that contains the snowy slope inclined at 45 degrees.

After this Headwall, there will be an exposed ridge right before the Island Summit that needs vigilant navigation.

Lobuche Peak

Among the three, Lobuche East is the most technical and demanding peak that not only requires a glacial crossing but also steep ice and snow slopes that can reach 45 to 50 degree angles.

There will also be knife-edge-like walls that need a very solid balance from you, along with accurate foot placement. In addition, the loose rocks and unstable scree will also make your step harder.

Is our Everest Three Peak Climbing Itinerary Ideal for Beginners?

There is a lot of information online that suggests the Everest Three Peak climbing expedition is suitable for beginner climbers.

However, we like to disagree as the Everest Three Peak Expedition is a high-altitude trek and climbing expedition that not only involves ascending three peaks over 6000 m but also crossing four major high Himalayan passes.

Additionally, the trekking terrain is quite demanding, with steep paths and a desolate, moon-like landscape. Similarly, the Island and Lobuche East peaks will need the utilization of technical climbing gear.

Although training and practice sessions will be offered thoroughly in our Everest Three Peak climbing expedition, having knowledge and skill beforehand will be highly advantageous.

So, Mera Peak climbing, Island Peak climbing, or the Everest Base Camp Trek at first will be more beginner-friendly options.

Altitude Sickness/AMS Management

It is undeniable that altitude sickness will be a common issue during our Everest Three Peak climbing expedition, not just because of the elevation but also due to rapid altitude gain.

We have placed adequate rest days for the proper and slow acclimatization throughout the journey, including rest and training sessions at Khare, along with a gradual ascent and shorter trekking hours before each summit attempt.

However, climbers often experience early minor symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), such as headaches, dizziness, insomnia, and loss of appetite.

To effectively prevent and treat these symptoms, common medicines such as Diamox, Ibuprofen, or Aspirin will be beneficial, along with proper hydration and rest. Our climbing guide will continuously monitor your condition and will only permit you to attempt the summit if you are in excellent physical shape.

Training and Preparation for the Everest Three Peak Climbing Expedition

If attaining all three peaks in one attempt is your desire, then understand that one month of standard training will not be enough. Our Everest Three Peak climbing 26 days expedition calls for substantial stamina, endurance, and muscle strength.

So apart from your standard physical training, such as swimming, running, or stair climbing, you should concentrate on experiencing real-life high altitude adventure with Mera or Island climbing expeditions beforehand.

Accommodation, Meals, and Transportation

We offer you standard accommodation in a double bedroom in a three-star hotel in Kathmandu with bed and breakfast service. During the trekking period, a double bedroom of modest mountain homes called the tea house will offer you a nice warm sleeping place.

During camping at the base and high camps of each summit, we offer you high-quality camping gear (tent, kitchen equipment, sleeping bag, chair, and table, etc).

You will have full board meals during the trekking and camping section, along with hot tea or coffee and unlimited boiled water.

Your transportation during the Everest Three Peak climbing itinerary will always occur in our private 4WD. Lukla flights, either from Ramechhap or Kathmandu, will also be managed.

Travel Insurance

Your travel insurance for our Everest Three Peak climbing expedition must clearly specify the inclusion of emergency medical helicopter evacuation, transport, or repatriation from the altitude of each summit we are determined to conquer.

It means your policy must clearly indicate the maximum search and rescue altitude by helicopter up to 6500 m minimum. Remember to also include the medical, accidental, and miscellaneous coverage for gear loss or damage, expanded stays, and trip cancellation.
