Overview of Everest Three Base Camp Trek

Our Everest three base camp trek is an ambitious trekking adventure to the Nepalese Himalayas, located in the Everest region of the Khumbu Valley. This trek follows the classic route of the Everest but avoids the usual crowds and chaos.

Over the course of 14 days of our Everest three base camp trek, you will travel through deep valleys, cross rushing rivers, and ascend the endless glaciers.

And, the aim is to step into the terrain of three magnificent base camps of the planet: Ama Dablam Base Camp (4600 m), Island Peak Base Camp (5087 m), and Everest Base Camp (5364 m).

These three destinations are like the Three Musketeers of the Everest region, which every hiker dreams of reaching one day. Thus, instead of separate itineraries, we have combined these popular locations into one comprehensive 14 days Everest three base camp trek, so you can tick off your bucket list in a single trip to Nepal.

Additionally, we have also included a helicopter return from Gorakshep to Lukla, reducing your trekking days. Plus, you will have four-star hotel accommodations in Kathmandu and high-quality lodging along the route.

Thus, our Everest three base camp trek promises you complete comfort and support, making it an unforgettable experience of your life.

Our Everest three base camp trek with helicopter return departs from Kathmandu and follows the legendary path of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

The stunning mountain landscape of Sagarmatha National Park through Lukla, Phakding, Namche, and Phortse will lead us to the Ama Dablam Base Camp, located right beneath the impressive Ama Dablam Peak (6812 m).

Then, the beautiful secluded trail through Chhukung and Chhukung Ri (5546 m) will take you to the Island Peak Base Camp, where you will stand directly under the Imja Tse Peak (6165 m).

Next, our Everest three base camp trek itinerary will take you across the overwhelming altitude of Kongma La Pass (5535 m) before you make your way to Everest Base Camp.

The next morning's hike will carry you to the summit of Kala Patthar (5644 m). Then, a helicopter will be ready to fly you back to Lukla from Gorakshep, right where your Everest three base camp trek started.

At all these base camps, you will find yourself in the Himalayas’ highest, where you will see the most impressive silhouettes of Ama Dablam, Everest, Nuptse, Thamserku, Lhotse, Pumori, and many others.

During the entire period of our Everest three base camp trek, you will also meet the Sherpa people, known for their distinctive hospitality and solidarity, as well as their unique Buddhist traditions.

Please remember, our 14 days Everest three base camp trek is quite a hard journey, and some mountaineering experience is therefore advisable. It is particularly delightful during the spring and autumn seasons in Nepal.

Everest Three Base Camp Trek - Essential Information

Best Season

The best time for the Everest three base camp trek falls in the months just before the summer monsoons (mid-April to late June) and right after them (September to mid-November).

During these times, the Khumbu Valley will be alive with climbers and hikers. Yet, our Everest three base camp trek will also take you into those parts of the Khumbu Valley that are less chaotic, so you can truly experience the magic and peace of the valley.

The weather will also be fine as you will be far from the monsoon season. In all three camps, you may experience a slight cold in the evenings, but the temperatures will remain manageable.

In these periods, you will see only a few traces of snow, so you can literally be in the place that brims with beauty and magic with maximum peace and calm.

Difficulty Level

The Everest three base camp trek, if undertaken individually, would have been classified as a category II moderate hiking experience. However, we have combined all three base camp treks in a single adventure, which also includes crossing one of the most challenging Everest Passes.

This elevates our Everest three base camp trek with helicopter return to a demanding category III hiking experience in the Khumbu Valley. The highest point of our Everest three base camp trek reaches 5644 m at Kala Patthar, but you will also face the challenge of conquering the Kongma La Pass at 5535 m and Chhukung Ri at 5546 m.

Although the helicopter flight reduces the return trekking days, you will still need to tackle the diverse terrain of Sagarmatha National Park, which can steeply ascend and descend.

Additionally, you shouldn’t underestimate the risk of altitude sickness. Therefore, our 14 days Everest three base camp trek is best suited for those who have some mountaineering experience.

Is the Everest Three Base Camp Trek suitable for New Hikers?

Undeniably, our Everest three base camp trek consists of numerous obstacles and challenges. However, if you are prepared physically and mentally for these demands of the trek, and have a good level of fitness, then you can consider joining the 14 days Everest three base camp trek even if you are a beginner hiker.

For your convenience, you can also tailor the trip by omitting the hike to any one of the base camps, which can save you from extra exertion. However, you will not be able to avoid the strain of long day hikes each day and the tough Nepali mountain terrain.

So, before you engage in our Everest three base camp trek, we suggest our beginner participants gain experience first through the Everest Base Camp trek, the Ama Dablam Base Camp trek, or the Island Base Camp trek.

Please consult a doctor if you have cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, or respiratory issues before joining our Everest three base camp trek.

Altitude Sickness/Acute Mountain Sickness/AMS and Acclimatization

The AMS is an unavoidable part of any high-altitude mountain trekking journey. This condition arises in the form of several physical manifestations because of low air pressure and low oxygen levels at higher altitudes, along with an increased walking pace.

If we give our bodies adequate time to acclimatize to the elevation, we can effectively prevent and treat AMS to a greater degree. Therefore, please rest and sleep early each day your trek ends.

The most effective way to prevent AMS is by following the principle of trekking higher and sleeping lower, which is known as the sawtooth technique.

Following this, we have included an ascent of Chhukung Ri during your stay at Chhukung Village to ensure you are perfectly acclimatized before you tackle the Kongma La Pass.

Additionally, we have shortened walking durations on the days leading up to any base camp, so you will have ample time to rest and acclimate. However, some minor signs of AMS may still show up, such as headache, nausea, appetite loss, and sleep loss.

Drink lots of fluid such as tea, water, soup, broth, juice, etc. If the symptoms still remain, then descend and rest. You can also choose to take Diamox in case the symptoms don’t go away.

We ensure that our guides are well-trained and aware of the actions they should take to reduce the AMS.

Preparation and Training

Even if you are in great shape and have tackled the mountains of Nepal before, the terrain will still keep throwing new challenges your way every day.

Therefore, we advise all our participants, whether you are a beginner or an experienced trekker, to prepare with an appropriate fitness routine to handle whatever the Everest three base camp trek may bring.

At first, begin with gentle exercises such as walks, runs on flat terrain, and then advance to running longer distances. Choose the diverse terrain, which can be forest, hills, cliffs, or ridges.

You can also prepare yourself physically with squats, planks, or push-ups, along with some weights or some sports such as football and basketball. Yoga and deep breathing will also help you tackle AMS.

Then, you can take yourself on a real hiking adventure in your hometown, so you can also get the altitude training before your departure.

Possible Alteration (Shortening or Extension) of the 14 Days Everest Three Base Camp Trek

If you think that undertaking the Everest three base camp trek all at once will be too demanding for you, then you can also personalize your adventure by removing any of the base camps from your itinerary.

You can skip the trek to the Ama Dablam Base Camp or Island Peak Base Camp.

If you have adventure in your blood, then you can also choose to ascend any of the peaks during your Everest three base camp trek. You can aim to summit the Ama Dablam Peak or Island Peak from their respective base camps.

You can also think of including a trek to Gokyo Lake and take on the challenge of Cho La Pass, which is another outstanding Everest pass, along with the Kongma La Pass.

Sleeping, Eating, and Transport

You will spend three nights in Kathmandu at a 4-star Fairfield by Marriott hotel near Thamel, where we will accommodate you in double rooms with bed and breakfast service.

You will have access to 24-hour hot and cold showers, a private high-class bathroom in your room, WiFi, and elegant furnishings available for your use.

During the trek, you will stay in the best available teahouses that will provide you with rooms, lunches, dinners, and breakfasts. In these lodges, you can recharge your devices (cameras, cell phones, etc.), access WiFi, and enjoy hot showers.

However, please note that you may have to pay an additional fee for these services.

For your transportation needs, we offer all international and domestic private transfers to and from the airport, as well as the Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu flight and a helicopter flight from Gorakshep to Lukla.

Travel Insurance

Kindly know that from April 1, 2025, Nepal has mandated travel insurance for all foreign trekkers. According to this new regulation, all trekkers must have valid insurance that covers medical emergencies, high-altitude sickness, and helicopter rescue before they can obtain a trekking permit.

Therefore, after you finalize your seat in our Everest three base camp trek, please send us your insurance copy along with your documents.

For our Everest Three Base Camp trek, please specify the maximum altitude for helicopter rescue up to 5700 meters.

Also, ensure that your insurance plan includes standard travel coverage for possible cancellations or delays in your travel plans or flights, as well as protection against damage, loss, or theft of your personal gear, and extra stays.

Permits essential for the Everest Three Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return

All three base camps included in our Everest three base camp trek with helicopter return are located within the Sagarmatha National Park of the Khumbu Valley.

Therefore, we will only require two permits to trek to all three base camps, which are:

Sagarmatha National Park permit: NPR 100 per Nepali hiker, NPR 3000 per foreign hiker, and NPR 1500 per SAARC hiker
Khumbu Local Area permit: NPR 2000 per hiker, except for Nepali people

Life Himalaya Trekking will be arranging all these permits as your representative in Nepal and will also be covering their respective fees through our total Everest three base camp trek cost.

Mobile Communication and WiFi/Internet

The most effective and economical way to stay connected through your mobile during our 14 days Everest three base camp trek is through the Namaste/Nepal Telecom network.

Ncell will also offer you a good and affordable service, but NTC will offer you a better signal in the remote mountain valleys of Nepal. You can easily buy the NTC SIM Card in Kathmandu, or you can also choose to use its eSIM Card.

It will offer you excellent signal in Lukla, Phakding, Namche, Phortse, and Tengboche, but the signal will be sporadic after that. It will also offer you a 4G network so you can use the internet on your mobile at a greater speed and lower cost.

Another option to use the internet in the Everest region is through the prepaid WiFi cards from Everest Link or AirLink. You may also have free WiFi at Lukla and the Namche route.

Upon arrival at the international airport in Kathmandu, our representative will pick you up from the airport and check you into your respective hotel. The next day you will visit some of the popular world heritage sites of Nepal like Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath (monkey temple), and Boudhanath. Later in the afternoon, you will be introduced to our trekking guide assigned during the trek and the managing director.

They will provide you with all the necessary equipment if necessary for the trek and all the required information before going on the trek.

Everest Three Base Camp trek route

After an early breakfast on the third day morning, you will take a 35 min flight to Lukla. This flight and landing in Lukla are considered one of the most enduring, jaw-dropping flights in the world. After a short break, you will start the long waited Everest three base camp trek in the Himalayas. Your trek starts by descending the river bank of Dudhkoshi river and trekking upstream to Phakding. This day is short as compared to other days as you have to acclimatize to the high altitude and terrain.

After morning breakfast we start our journey to Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa Capital. This day is longer than the earlier day. During the trek to Namche Bazaar, you will see the first glimpse of The mighty Everest for the first time on a clear day.
