Overview of Baruntse Expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley
Are you drawn to the high Himalayas like we are? Do you keep hearing the beautiful melody of the unique far away Himalayas in Nepal? If yes, the Life Himalaya Trekking, a world-class adventure travel company, offers you its Baruntse expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley- a journey into Nepal's most remote and wild peaks of Mera Central (6461 m) and Mount Baruntse (7129 m).
Made for the experienced, daring climbers, our Baruntse expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley will offer you proper acclimatization along with a beautiful route that will deliver you a personal experience through the less-traveled Hinku Valley.
Among the two peaks that we attempt in our Baruntse expedition 28 days adventure, Mera Peak is the most stunning hiking peak of Makalu Barun National Park, while Baruntse stands as the most well-known 7000 m over peak of the Everest region.
It is also one of the few peaks in Nepal that boasts a high success rate of ascent. Its ascent also offers the most prestigious mountain panoramas that exist on earth as we get surrounded by not only Everest but also Lhotse, Makalu, Chamlang, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, Kanchenjunga, and Mera.
The successful conquest of the summit occurred on May 30, 1954, when Colin Todd and Geoff Harrow conquered it through the southeast ridge, which has now turned into the normal approaching route for the Baruntse expedition with Mera Peak itinerary.
The approach of our Baruntse expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley takes a fantastic turn following the Mera Central first to Mera La and then to Baruntse Base Camp (5380 m).
Then, a rotation ascent will be followed between Camp I and Camp II with a final push to the summit within a week. The descent will occur through the spectacular Amphu Lapcha Pass (5845 m) that will ultimately lead to the Khumbu Valley, in complete relaxation, where you will celebrate your first 7,000 meters of altitude.
The entire trail of the Baruntse expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley is not technically difficult and essentially a straightforward climb on snow and ice with a few more hanging sections.
Let us assure you that our Baruntse expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley will be a perfect training ground for you before you move on to tackle the 8000 m over peaks. But mind you, this expedition will need your highest level of commitment not only as a climber but also as a team.
Stages of our Baruntse Expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley
Stage 1: Trekking through the Hinku Valley in counterclockwise Route
After Lukla, your Baruntse expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley will follow the anticlockwise route through the secluded villages of the Hinku Valley up to Khare.
Stage 2: Training for Climbing the Mera Peak
At Khare, you will get extensive knowledge about the climbing gear usage from our highly skilled Sherpa mountaineering guide.
Stage 3: Ascend the Mera Summit
A journey from Khare to Mera High Camp (5,768 m) will be followed, after which you will push for the 6461 m altitude of the Mera Summit.
Stage 4: Mount Baruntse Expedition kicks off
After the successful conquest of the Mera Summit, a path through Seto Pokhari will end you up at the Baruntse Base Camp (5,380 m). After a Sherpa puja ceremony, your rotation ascent from base camp to Camp I (6100 m) and Camp II (6400 m) will occur before the final attack on the Baruntse Summit.
Stage 5: Descent through Amphu Lapcha Pass (5845 m)
Now the exciting descent will take place through the high and technical alpine pass of Amphu Lapcha, which will lead you straight to the Khumbu valley.

One of the big days of our Baruntse expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley is here. Rising early, we will all equip ourselves with our ice gear and set off at around 2 AM.
Our climbing route will guide us over firn and snow slopes along the moderately steep Mera glacier. Then, we will come across a glacial dome where we will have to make use of a fixed rope, ice axe, and crampons.
Finally, we will be over the Mera Central Summit watching the monstrous Himalayan mammoths of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and, in the distance, Kanchenjunga.
We will now gradually descend back towards the High camp in around three hours. Now packing our items, we will march down to Mera La Pass and venture right to Honku Valley.

Climbing Period, Climb Camp I, Camp II, Summit (7,129 m / 23,390 ft), and Return to Base Camp
The Baruntse expedition will be undertaken from the base camp of the peak. Staying for one or two days at the base camp, we will engage in the puja ceremony held by our Sherpa team.
Then, we will also undertake a training class under the guidance of our climbing Sherpa guide. From the Base Camp, then the rotation ascent will commence between the two high camps of Baruntse (Camp I and Camp II).
We also have a few contingency days set aside for the successive attempts, bad weather, and the health of the climbers. However, keep in mind that we must clear all the camps and be at the Baruntse Base Camp by the end of the 21st day.
We will follow the southeast ridge of the peak, which is considered a semi-technical ascent AD+. There will be snow slopes inclining to 45 to 50 degrees, but the most technical challenge will be presented when climbing upward towards Camp I and Camp II of the summit.
There will also be a solid frozen wall extending to 7000 m elevation, where fixed ropes must be used. We will attack the Baruntse Summit from Camp II and descend the same way.
The days of the Baruntse expedition will be followed as:
- Ascent from Base Camp to Camp I (6100 m), 5 to 6 hours
Camp I of the summit will be established after the West Col on the expansive icy solid plateau. It will be right on the way from where the Barun Glacier will begin beneath the southeast ridge of the summit.
From the Base Camp, we will follow the ascending snowy trail that will climb over the daunting 210 m long vertical wall of snow, ice, and rock inclined at 45 degrees.
The ridge section will be reached from where the steep, sharp upward ascent will be continued towards the West Col, ultimately arriving at the exposed section of the Barun Glacier.
- Ascent from Camp I to Camp II (6400 m), 4 to 5 hours
Camp II will be set up on another ridge between two false summits. The route will be comparatively simple, where the risk of falling rocks, avalanches, or hidden crevasses will be fairly low. However, for extra precaution, safety ropes will be used to ascend.
- Ascend to the Baruntse Summit and Trek Back to Base Camp, 10 to 12 hours
The real technical and long hardship will begin now as we start very early from Camp II towards the 7000 m over summit. Beyond Camp II, the fixed line ropes will be in place by our Sherpa Guides.
We will surmount the sharp, straight ascent over the ridge of 6600 m elevation. Once we are over this section, another fixed line of ropes and railings will be installed.
We will face three additional false summits before we are at the true summit of Baruntse. The tip of this peak is quite edgy and pointed, thus limiting the space for the climbers.
Proudly salute Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Lhotse, after which a daunting descent will take place through Camp II, I, and towards the Base Camp.
NB
Kindly understand that the itinerary that we have stated here is only a guideline. The days may not go as planned, and our lead guide has the exclusive right to adjust the climbing rotation as per the well-being of the climber, prevailing climate, and snow conditions. Delays may arise, and we cannot accept responsibility for such occurrences.

Baruntse Expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley Trip Information
When is the best season for the Baruntse Expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley?
The most recommended and most chosen time by climbers for the Baruntse expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley is the Nepali autumn and spring.
March, April, and May are nurtured with the spring weather right before the heavy monsoon. Moderate snowy trail, much calmer wind over the Mera and Baruntse summit, green, rich landscape, and warmer days create the perfect environment for the Baruntse expedition 28 days adventure.
The autumn weather of September, October, and November, on the other hand, gathers more snow, thus facilitating easy ascent on both peaks. However, days will be shorter and winds will be quite fierce as compared to the spring.
June, July, and August are characterized by heavy snowfall and avalanches on the trail from Camp I and Camp II of Baruntse. December, January, and February bring in fierce winds, snow, and cold that often make the peak attempt almost impossible sometimes.
How difficult is the Baruntse Expedition 28 Days Trip?
Baruntse Summit is an AD+ class 4 peak, while Mera Summit is a PD moderate hiking mountain. On the other hand, the Amphu Lapcha pass at 5845 m is a technical mountain pass that also necessitates the usage of a jumar and a rope.
Since all these adventures are incorporated as one into our Baruntse expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley, this makes it a very demanding category 4 mountaineering expedition that doesn’t suit the new climbers.
The hardest segment of our Baruntse expedition with Mera peak itinerary is the ascent from the Baruntse Base camp to Camp I, overcoming the Mera Glacier and the glacial dome to Mera Summit, and crossing the crevasses toward the Amphu Lapcha Pass.
Therefore, strong skills with climbing gear over the slope up to 45 to 50 degrees, knowledge of safety techniques, rope management, and high altitude climbing experience are a must for this expedition.
Also, you must have strong physical and mental capabilities along with a heightened awareness for our Baruntse expedition 28 days adventure.
Most Demanding Technical Section of Baruntse Expedition with Mera Peak Itinerary
Not the entire route, but some sections of our Baruntse expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley are quite tricky and technical. Such as:
Mera Summit
The overwhelming crossing of the Mera Glacier and the glacial dome are the sections that are quite technical during the ascent of Mera Summit.
Baruntse Summit
- A climbing section from Base Camp to Camp I
A 210 m at a 45-degree angle sheer icy rock wall at 5800 m altitude will be the first challenge of the Baruntse Summit, which will not only be long but also hard due to fierce winds and icy cold temperatures.
- Summit Attack
Beyond Camp II, before reaching atop the Baruntse Summit, there will be a sheer climb to the 6600 m ridge, where railings and rope installation will be necessary. The summit of the mountain is also cramped up, making standing here for a long time quite arduous.
- Descent
The descent from the Baruntse summit is just as challenging, as you will have to go down using the fixed ropes and railings again.
Altitude Sickness/AMS Management
The main issue on our Baruntse expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley will be related to the altitude. Of course, some will adapt well and quickly to the high elevation, while some will take longer.
Therefore, each climber must concentrate on right and slow acclimatization, implementing the sawtooth technique, which means climb higher and sleep lower.
As for the signs, we must also be cautious for the appearance of headache, appetite loss, fatigue, and sleep loss. Diamox, the common medicine, will help to a great extent not only to treat but also to prevent and quicken the adaptation process.
However, moving down will be the best approach if the symptoms remain persisting. As for our acclimatization plan, Life Himalaya Trekking has proposed the ascent of Mera Peak first to allow acclimatization before attempting the Baruntse Summit.
Additionally, we have scheduled rest and training sessions at Khare, Baruntse Base Camp, Camp I, and Camp II of Baruntse so all climbers will be 100 percent prepared to tackle the 7000 m over altitude of the Baruntse Summit.
Physical Training for the Baruntse Expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley
Please do not assume that the standard training and physical preparation that you undertake for other adventures in Nepal will be adequate for our Baruntse expedition via Mera Peak and Hinku Valley.
This expedition demands exceptional endurance, stamina, and strength. Therefore, in addition to your regular training, which involves walking, swimming, and running, it is also very important for you to gain authentic high-altitude experience through climbing Mera Peak, Island Peak, or other 6000 m peaks.
Technical Training for Baruntse Expedition 28 Days Adventure

To be comfortable with sudden drop-offs and steep descents, we also advise you to train on local climbing walls.
