Safety and Altitude Acclimatation Tips on EBC Trek

The iconic Everest Base Camp Trek presents you with numerous challenges on its trails. Trekking to the base of the world’s highest peak is not an easy feat for everyone. You will be reaching an altitude of 5400 meters from the sea level. The concern of altitude sickness arises when you start hiking up from an elevation above 2500 meters from sea level. Moreover, hiking up in the rocky terrain requires a lot of safety precautions. Here are a few mandatory safety and acclimatization tips you must follow.

Successfully submitted Everest Base camp TrekProper Acclimatization

Acclimatization is crucial while you trek in Nepal. The chances of altitude sickness increase as you ascend toward the high altitude. This is why you should keep acclimatization days in your itinerary. This helps your body adapt to the higher altitudes and decreases the chances of altitude sickness. Trekking to the Mt Everest base generally consists of two acclimatization days at Mount Everest and Dingboche. These two days of acclimatization will help your body adapt to the Himalayan weather and provide you with some time to rest.

Quality Gear and equipment

One of the most important factors to complete the trek successfully is having quality gear and equipment. The weather at EBC is usually chilly, and you need quality gear to keep your body warm. You might quickly catch a cold if you expose your body to cold weather conditions. You need sturdy hiking boots, warm gloves, and thick socks to protect your hands, feet, and toes from freezing. Also, make sure that you have a quality down jacket and warm trousers to keep your body warm while trekking.

Ascend Gradually

Another crucial thing to be aware of while trekking to EBC is ascending gradually. No matter how much pace you can pick hiking up, the key is to ascend slowly. Your body needs to acclimatize properly at higher altitudes. One of the golden rules to follow while trekking is “Climb High Sleep Low”. Covering maximum altitude in a single day increases the chances of catching altitude sickness. You should only cover around 500-700 meters of elevation gain daily.

Stay Hydrated

It is essential to keep your body hydrated while trekking in the Himalayas. Since you will be sweating a lot, it is vital that you keep yourself hydrated. Dehydration increases the chances of altitude sickness. It would be best to drink around 3-4 litres of water daily. Hydration plays a key role in many of our body’s functioning.

Permits and Fees for EBC Trek

The Mt Everest Base Camp Hike will require two permits. Khumbu Rural Muncipality Permits and the Sagarmatha National Park Permits are the two permits required to reach the base camp. You can get the Sagarmatha National Park permit from Kathmandu or at Lukla. However, you won’t be able to find the Khumbu Rural Municipality Permits at Kathmandu, and you can get that permit after arriving at Lukla airport.

Permits Fees for Foreigner Fees for SAARC nationals Fees for Nepali Citizens
Sagarmatha National Park Entry Fee 3000 1500 100
Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit 2000 2000 Free

Note: The cost for Khumbu Rural Municipality Permits will cost you Nrs 2500 if your stay exceeds four weeks. Also, children below 10 years of age are given free entry to Sagarmatha National Park.

Sherpa Culture and Traditions during the EBC Trek.

The Sherpas are the inhabitants of the Himalayan region of Nepal. These people are known for their bravery, humility, and innocence. Most of the Everest region’s Teahouses, Lodges, Hotels, etc., are run by the Sherpa people. They are extremely hospitable and friendly. During your stay on the EBC trek, you will be able to interact with them and learn about their Culture, traditions, and Lifestyle. The Sherpa people follow the Tibetan Buddhism as their religion. Mani Rimdu, Dumji, Loshar, Palden Lhamo, etc., are some common festivals the Sherpa people celebrate.

Moreover, You can also witness them wearing their traditional dresses, listening to their traditional music, and dancing to it. Sherpas are the best guides or porters for mountaineering expeditions or trekking. They can navigate any challenges or hurdles with ease. Interacting with a sherpa will help you learn about their lifestyle, rituals, and their unique cultures.

Unforgettable 15-Day Everest Base Camp Trek
Our Everest Base Camp trek was an unforgettable experience, thanks to the incredible service of our guide, Jal Tamang, and porters, Dinesh and N Devraj. Jal’s expertise, care, and encouragement made the journey safe and enjoyable, while his knowledge of the trail and local culture added depth to the experience. Dinesh and N Devraj were outstanding, handling our luggage with care and always lending a helping hand despite the challenging terrain. Their strength, positivity, and dedication were truly inspiring. The trek itself offered breathtaking views, cultural insights, and unforgettable moments, and the support from this team made it all the more special. Highly recommended!

EBC trek
I highly recommend this company! Shiba Took excellent care of us throughout our entire trip and even accommodated us with the hotel room our last day so we can get ready and fly out without worry. Our guys did an amazing job in motivating us and getting us through our daily hikes. We were accommodated with the best lodges that were available the entire time which made the entire experience much more enjoyable. Thank you Shiba and his team for an experience of a lifetime!!!

Life Himalaya organized the absolute best tour for all 8 of us. We all made it and were all impressed with how smooth the entire trek and helicopter ride was planned. The guides and accommodations exceeded expectations. The owner of the company Shiba took care of us personally to ensure all our troubles along the way would be minimized. I would highly recommend booking through life Himalaya and if you don’t you are making a mistake! I know I will be back. Thank you life Himalaya for everything!

Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar
Unforgettable experience!! I believe you can spend thousands on these sorts of expeditions but that doesn’t always buy the care and attention we received from the Life Himalaya Trekking team. Absolutely priceless!! From the second we landed everything was arranged, someone was waiting to pick us up at the airport and they stayed by our side throughout the whole trip to ensure we had everything we needed at all times. We never waited for anything, they made sure we enjoyed every minute of trip. I had exceptions, but Life Himalaya completely exceeded them. Ask for Birsha and Rabin!!

We started looking for tour company
We started looking for tour company’s on the net to take us to Everest Base Camp, we got in touch with Life Himalaya Trekking because of their detailed description of the trek on their website and the fact that they gave back to the local communities.

From the moment we made contact, Shiba (the owner) responding pretty much instantly and was able to answer any question we had. When we arrived in Kathmandu, the team were at the airport to met us and take us to our accommodation. Everyone at Life Himalayan Trekking has been amazing to deal with and after talking to Shiba we decided to extend our trek to include the Pikey Peak trail and walk to Lukla rather than fly.

This was the best decision we made, the trek to Lukla was actually our favorite part of the whole trip and we would never have even thought about it without Shiba’s guidance.

We want to give a huge shout out to Kieran and Sabot, our guides, who where totally professional and caring throughout our trip. I would not have been able to make the 230+ kms we trekked over 18 days without their support and guidance

Must hire this company!!
We went to trek to Everest base camp in June and went with Life Himalaya. From the owner, Shiba, to the guides to the porters everyone was extremely friendly and helpful and made our experience amazing! They were so hospitable and really went above and beyond to make our journey to base camp the best it could be. The lodges they booked were the best you could probably get and for a really affordable price! Shiba took us out for lunch and booked a hotel room for us for us the day we got back so that we could shower before our flights. He didn’t have to do that at all. The best part of this company is that a portion of the profits made go to the rural villages of Nepal to help build schools, get medical aid, etc! I highly recommend going with them, I don’t think anyone does it better than them!!
