Everest Base Camp Trek Route, Length and Duration

EBC trek is an iconic multi-day trekking route situated in the Himalayan mountains region of Nepal. The Everest Base Camp Trek route offers spectacular mountain views and passes through a variety of diverse environments, ranging from lush green pastures to icy rocky glaciers. Along the way, you will explore breathtaking landscapes, stroll around Sagarmatha national park, and visit monasteries and Sherpa villages. The length of the trek depends on individual fitness levels and personal preferences, but it generally takes 12-15 days for roundtrip completion.

Length and Duration

The Everest Base Camp Trek provides an incredible, yet strenuous journey up to the famous base camp on Mount Everest. Travelers face the challenge of 80 miles (130km) of the high-altitude route. It normally takes between 12 and 15 days to complete. Starting from Lukla, trekkers will experience long days of walking and acclimatization with rest days continuing along the same path.

We plan out the typical itinerary in smaller daily sections of 8-10 miles (13-16km) each. 15 kilometers per day is not that terrible because you realize that the average walking speed is around 5 kilometers per hour. The difficult terrain, steep rise, and significant elevation gains that need to be achieved will prevent you from trekking at that speed, of course. However, We can complete this trek at a comfortable pace below the average trekking speed. For this reason, mental preparedness will be very important while trekking. Hence, Mentally prepared people who are engaging in regular physical activity can complete this trek.

Overview of the Climate in Nepal

Nepal has a complex climate that can vary greatly depending on which region of the country you find yourself in. Generally, the climate in Nepal can be divided into two distinct seasons—the dry season and the wet season. In most parts of the country, the dry season lasts from October or November through May or June. While the wet season typically runs from late June to late August or September. The best time for Everest Base Camp helicopter tour is during the dry season when weather conditions are more favorable.

The fantastic journey leads you beneath soaring snow-capped peaks, then you follow the adventurous and challenging routes that cross deep valleys, beautiful monasteries, magnificent Mani walls, suspension bridges, and rhododendron woodlands.

On the other hand, a helicopter tour gives you incredible aerial views of one of the world’s most unique and spectacular landscapes from above. The helicopter tour offers unbeatable views from the air. This allows travelers to experience the incredible beauty of Mount Everest and other Himalayan peaks in just a few short hours. However, while it is certainly quicker and more comfortable than the traditional Base Camp Trek, it lacks the challenge of enduring a lengthy hike and will not provide such an in-depth cultural experience as trekking through villages along a route. Both offer a lifetime of memories, but it helps to understand the differences between these two experiences before making your final decision.

Altitude sickness

Altitude Sickness in Everest Base Camp Trek

Handling the threat of high-elevation sickness is among the most difficult tasks for trekkers who are traveling to Everest Base Camp. The physiological adaptations your body experiences at high elevations are known as altitude sickness. You will not encounter the typical effects of altitude if you trek Everest Base Camp with the proper precautions. But if you move up the route too fast, you run the chance of getting severe mountain sickness. This is because your body won’t be able to adapt to the reduced oxygen levels at higher elevations. The most crucial thing to keep in mind is to climb steadily and to take acclimatization days.

Altitude Sickness in Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour

The Everest base camp is located at a very high altitude. On this tour, you will be changing the location from Low to high altitude in a short amount of time. It may cause altitude sickness issues. That’s why you will spend a short period in Kalapatthar to enjoy the scenic view of the majestic mount Everest and other gigantic peaks. 15-20 min will be enough time to explore and capture the memories with your loved ones in this Place. But you’ll have enough time to see the breathtaking mountains that the Everest View Hotel offers while having Breakfast.

Altitude sickness only occurs when a person is above 2500 meters above sea level. Due to no exposure to the outdoor environment, a person won’t feel any kind of changes inside the body during flight time. When you come out of the Helicopter, you will start to feel changes inside your body. So for this reason you get only some minutes to explore the Everest base camp region.

Since there is a pressure differential between the interior of the chopper and limited oxygen at Kala Patthar, you face the possibility of experiencing altitude sickness when the helicopter lands there. If you experience breathing difficulties, you will receive supplementary oxygen immediately. To meet these scenarios, the helicopter is equipped with masks and bottles of oxygen.

    Difficulty Level

    Mera Peak Difficulty Level

Mera Peak is a trekking peak according to classification by the Nepalese Mountaineering Association. The peaks in this category are fewer or no technical sections, perfectly matching the needs of newbies.

As this peak has no technical sections, the climb is pretty basic. Climbers with basic climbing training and a good endurance level can do it. There is no need for prior climbing history for Mera Peak. Comparatively, Mera Peak is less technical than Island Peak. No crevasses, or narrow ridges, just ice trekking & climbing.

Mera Peak Climbing involves trekking for several weeks in the high areas of the region. High altitude, steep hills, rough sections, glacier and snowy paths, long trekking hours, and remote conditions are some of its major challenges.

    Island Peak Difficulty Level

Island Peak’s difficulty level is slightly more than Mera Peak’s. The peak is a bit trickier than Mera Peak in terms of technicality. Except that both of the climbs are more or less quite similar.

Island Peak in Nepal is also in the same category of trekking peaks as Mera Peak. A trekking peak is a right fit for new and inexperienced climbers. As it is a bit technical, you must have basic climbing skills. There are crevasses, narrow ridges, headwall, and icefall sections. Hence, using gears such as ladders, crampons, axes, ropes, etc., should not be a problem for you. There is no particular need for prior technical experience as well for climbing Island Peak.

High-elevation trekking, long trekking days, steep trails, rugged sections, extreme weather, and snowy sections are significant obstacles. A person with good basic climbing training and physical endurance is the right fit for Island Peak climb.
