Everest Three High Passes Trek itinerary offers the adventurous trekking experience in the Khumbu region. The trek goes through three higher passes – Kongma, Chola, and Renjo La.

The Everest Three High Passes trek Itinerary begins as we take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. From Lukla, we start our trek and spend several days trekking through the homelands of the Sherpa people. Going through Phakding we rest for a day at Namche Bazaar. We enjoy the bustling market town in the heart of Sherpa country. Going through the Tengboche Monastery we reach Dingboche. These rest days in Dingboche allow time to explore further and to acclimatize.

Ascending the trek towards Chukung and Gorakshep, you will cross Kongma La Pass and hike to Everest Base Camp. You also have a chance to visit Kalapather during the hike. After exploring this amazing place, you cross over Chola-La pass to go to Gokyo Valley. You will rest again in Gokyo Ri which is the best viewpoint in the entire Everest Region. Moving forward to Marulung we cross Renjo la pass. It provides a lifetime memory of panoramic views of the Everest and other Himalayan ranges.

After a nice view from the Renjo-La top, we descend the trail following Namche Bazaar. We then trek down to Lukla and have to take a flight to Kathmandu.

Everest Three High Passes Trek Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive in Nepal and transfer to the hotel in Kathmandu

Our representative will welcome with warm greetings as you arrive in Kathamandu. Then you will transfer towards your hotel on our private vehicle as per your group size. You will introduce yourself to your trek guide in the evening and do a short trip briefing. Then you’ll have the welcome dinner hosted by us at a typical Nepalese Restaurant. You will be able to enjoy and taste the Nepalese cuisine. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

Day 02: Flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,804 m) trek to Phakding (2,623 m)

Your first-day journey to Everest high passes begins today. With an early departure from Domestic Airport, you will take a flight to Lukla. It will take around 35 minutes flight from Kathmandu to reach Lukla. You’ll introduce to your Porters and crew members on reaching Lukla.

After a short meeting, we start our trekking journey through the paved footpath passing typical Sherpa’s villages. We go through green valleys along with the Dudh Koshi River until we reach Phakding village after walking for 5 to 6 hours. Overnight stay at the tea house in Phakding.

Day 03: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar located at 3,440 m

On this day you will go on a 6 to 7 hours gentle walk to the beautiful settlement of Sherpa people along with Dudh Koshi River. Crossing the series of suspension bridges trek continues to the village of Jorsalle- Sagarmatha National Park entry point. Your trekking permit and TIMS checking point. Then you will able to see the first sights of Everest panoramas and Lhotse before reaching Namche Bazaar.

Namche Bazaar is a delightful mountain town and considered as the gateway to the Everest region. It was built on a steep mountain bowl with excellent views of the Himalayas. You can get every facility like restaurants, banks, and shops, etc. Overnight at a tea house in Namche Bazaar.

Day 04: Rest day at Namche Bazaar and excursion Namche and Syangboche (3,880 m) 2-3 hrs.

Today is your rest day for acclimatization process at the higher altitude. We will be staying in Namche bazaar to take proper rest so that you may not suffer from altitude sickness in further coming days. We will go on a short hike towards the Everest View Hotel to see the close-up views of Mt. Ama Dablam. You will also see the panoramic view of the world’s highest mountains including Mt. Everest. Then we return to Namche, and take rest and enjoy the rest of the day by visiting the beautiful town. This day you may have opportunities to explore the culture, traditions, and primitive lifestyles of Sherpa people. Overnight stay at the tea house at Namche Bazaar.

Day 05: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche

 

Our day begins after having breakfast at Namche. The trail goes steep up through the beautiful forest, mind-blowing villages. You can see the magnificent views of the Himalayas like Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Lhotse, Thamserku and Kwangde peak and so on.

We continue our trek towards the village of Kenjoma and Sansa to reach Phunki Tanga. From Phunki, we move up through the pine forest until we reach Tengboche village. Tengboche is the magnificent village located at 3867m with a charming spot of close views of the world’s highest mountains Ama Dablam.

We will visit renowned oldest and biggest Buddhist Tengboche monasteries. You will get to interact with the nourishing sprit and daily praying Buddhist monks which is one of the prime highlights of the trek. Overnight stay at a tea house in Tengboche.

Day 06: Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche (4,350 m) 5-6 hrs.

We go on a short hike passing through lush green Rhododendron forest to reach the village of Pangboche. Our trail passes through several typical villages, Mani walls, and several Chortens. We reach towards the village of Orsho following the Imja Khola and crossing the bridges. Orsho is the way that separates the trial to Pheriche and Dingboche.

We enter the Imja Valley following the breathtaking views of Ama Dablam. We continue our trek and cross the Imja valley to reach the Dingboche. It is a picturesque village located at an altitude of 4350m. You will go through the cultivated fields where people grow food like barley, potato and so on. Overnight stay at a tea house in Dingboche.

Day 07: Acclimatize at Dingboche

Today is another for your acclimatization. We stop here to get proper acclimatization on a high altitude. It is very important for you to stay safe from altitude sickness while trekking at high altitude.

We will hike towards the Nagarjun Peak today. From there we can see the tremendous views of majestic peaks like Mt. Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, Cho-Oyu, Island peak, Ama Dablam, Taboche, Cholaste, and many mighty peaks. We also visit the beautiful Dingboche village. After lunch, we will have free time to rest and relax. Overnight stay at a tea house in Dingboche.

Day 08: Trek from Dingboche to Chhukung

Our day starts after breakfast at Dingboche. We go on an amazing hike towards the beautiful village of Chukkung. We can see the mountain villages, magnificent views of the Himalayas on the way towards Chukkung. Chukkung is also popular as Imjatese Valley located at 4743m. After 4 to 5 hours walk, we reach the beautiful Chukkung valley. Overnight stay at the tea house in Chukkung.

Day 09: Trek from Chukkung to Lobuche (4,930 m) via Kongma La pass (5,535 m) 6-7 hrs.

Today is the big day as you cross the first pass i.e Kongma la Pass on your adventurous trip. Our day begins with breakfast at the tea house. We walk through the valley after ensuring proper rest and ascend towards the uphill trail to the great Kongma La Pass. Crossing this adventurous pass, we descend towards the Khumbu glacier moraines. While crossing the high altitude path on glaciers you may face difficulties. So you must follow your guide to avoid the problems. After crossing the pass, the trail turns north through Khumbu glacier which takes you towards Lobuche.

Lobuche is one of the beautiful Sherpa’s settlements surrounded by mountains like Everest, Pumori, Nuptse, Lhotse, and so on. Overnight stay at the tea house in Lobuche.

Day 10: Trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5,170 m/16,961 ft.) and hike to Everest Base Camp and back to Gorak Shep

Today is the most important day of our trek as we follow the trail to Everest Base Camp(5,364 m). Our day starts after breakfast at Lobuche and starting with an easy and gentle uphill walk for a few hours. Then the trail passes short steep climb to reach the Gorak Shep- a small settlement of Sherpa’s near to Mt. Everest. On reaching Gorak Shep, we keep all our belongings here and take some rest. After having lunch, we head towards the Mt. Everest Base Camp with huge excitement and route passing through small rocks, short ups and downs hills covered with snow all the way.

After reaching our Everest Base Camp we enjoy the breathtaking views of the great Himalayas like Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Khumbuste, Pumori, Ama Dablam, and many other peaks. We’ll take our time inspecting the Khumbu glacier, ice fall as well as make the best photographs as well videos. After a great time at the world’s highest mountain, we return back to Gorak Shep with the same trial. We cannot stay at Everest Base Camp since there is no place and tea houses to stay. Overnight stay at the tea house in Gorak Shep.

Day 11: Hike to Kalapathar and trek to Lobuche or Flight back to Lukla/Kathmandu

 

On this day we wake early in the morning to climb the top of Kalapatthar located at 5545m. It is one of the best viewpoints of the Everest region. We can observe the 360-degree panoramic views with vibrant sunrise of snow-capped mountains from the top of Kalapatthar.

Then we trek down to Gorakshep. We trek down to Lobuche(4930m) enjoying the Himalayan vistas. After walking for 6 to 7 hours we finally reach Lobuche. Overnight stay at a tea house in Lobuche.

If you don’t want to trek further from Kalapathar then you can end your trek and take an air-flight to Lukla and then to Kathamandu.

Day 12: Trek from Lobuche to Dzongla located at 4,830 m

Our day begins after having breakfast at Lobuche. From Lobuche, we descend our trail alongside the Khumbu glacier. On the way, we admire the magnificent views of Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Pumori, Khumbuste, Cholaste, and so on. We pass through many Buddhist stupas, stones walls towards the Chola Lake nearby.

Our walk descends down for a couple of hours and crosses the Chola Khola bridge before we reach Dzongla. We stay at Dzongla located at 4830m. It is a beautiful spot at the base of the Chola pass since there is no place to stay before crossing Cho-la pass. Overnight stay at the tea house in Dzongla.

Day 13: Trek from Dzongla to Gokyo (4,750 m) via Cho La Pass

On this day we the second pass i.e Cho La pass on this adventurous trip. We go on the trail that leads steep-up and then passes through the icy trails and glaciers to cross the Cho La pass.

We can admire the beautiful Chola Lake on reaching the top of the basin of Cho La. You can also get amazing views of mountains like Ama Dablam and Cholatse. Finally, we cross Cho La Pass(5387m) after 7 to 8 hours of walk. After that, the trails lead us through rocky chunks towards the village of Thangnak.

Our walk continues towards the beautiful village of Gokyo, at the foot of Ngozumba glacier. The trail passes through the rocky paths and highest altitude freshwater lakes- Gokyo lakes towards the Gokyo valley. Overnight stay at the tea house in Gokyo.

Day 14: Acclimatization day at Gokyo and excursion over Gokyo RI and Gokyo lakes

Today is another day for the acclimatization process at a higher altitude. We will be staying in Gokyo to get proper rest. After breakfast, we will be climbing another viewpoint Gokyo RI(5357m) of the Everest region. You can see colorful Buddhist prayer flags from the top of Gokyo Ri. We can also see 360 panoramic views of the world’s highest mountains like Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, Cholatse, Gyachung Kang, and Taboche and so on. You can also see the apex vistas of the Gokyo valley and beautiful lakes of the Everest region.

You can also see the massive Ngozumpa glacier. It is the longest glacier in the world. After collecting great memories we hike down and the rest of the day we take a rest. Overnight stay at the tea house in Gokyo.

Day 15: Trek from Gokyo to Marulung via Renjo La pass

Today is another tough and exciting day where we cross the third and final pass i.e Renjo La pass located at 5345m. We start our trek early after having breakfast and follow the trail towards the end of Gokyo Lake. With the marvelous views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Cholatse, and Taboche we then cross Renjo la pass. This is one of the difficult passes of this trip.

On reaching the top of the pass we can admire the breathtaking panorama of Mt. Cho Oyu and other surrounding peaks. Our walk follows the frozen ponds after crossing the pass beneath Renjo La. We descend towards the small settlement of Sherpa’s at Lungdeng and have lunch. Thereafter, our walk continues until we reach the beautiful village of Marlung located at 4210m. It takes 8 to 9 hours to reach Marulung from Gokyo. Overnight in Marlung.

 

Day 16: Trek from Marlung to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,28 ft.) 6-7 hrs.

Our day begins after having breakfast at Marlung. Our trail passes through the Bhote Koshi River towards the valley of Langmuche Khola. We descend exploring the beautiful Sherpa’s villages, ancient and old Buddhist monasteries. We explore the culture, rare lifestyles, and traditions of Sherpa and Tibetan peoples until we reach the Thame village. After having lunch at Thame, we will be visiting the renowned oldest Thame monasteries where the Buddhist monks used to pray daily.

Many trekkers visit Thame in spring as the most famous festival Mani Rimdu is celebrated at that time. This is the main festival of the Sherpa’s and held in Mid-May each year. Thereafter, we trek down towards the Namche Bazaar for our night stay. Overnight at the tea house in Namche Bazaar.

Day 17: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,804 m/9,200 ft.) 6-7 hrs.

Today is the last day of our Everest Three High Passes trek itinerary in the heartland of Himalayas. On this day, we descend through the Hillary suspension bridge over the Dudh Koshi River and walk through Jorsale.

Then our trek descends the beautiful village of Monjo. Our trek continues crossing a suspension bridge towards the gateway of Everest Region to Lukla. We enjoy our last dinner with the crew members and porters and celebrates the successful completion of our journey in Lukla. Overnight stay at the tea house in Lukla.

Day 18: Flight back from Lukla to Kathmandu

We take the earliest flight back to Kathmandu which is a 35 minutes flight from Lukla. Our representative will transfer you towards your respective hotels on our private vehicle. The rest of the day is leisure time. You may relax and rest the whole day or explore the famous markets and places to do some souvenir shopping.

In the evening, we would have a farewell dinner together with the guide and office representative. We will celebrate the successful completion of our Everest three high passes trek itinerary. Overnight stay at star rated Hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 19: Farewell and Final Departure

After a wonderful time at Everest Three High Passes trekking you will transfer towards Tribhuvan International Airport for your departure flight. Our representative escorts you to the airport and drop you at the airport.

Best Season to do the Everest Three High Passes Trek

This is the most popular time to visit the Everest Three High Passes is during Autumn. September to November is a time of less precipitation, steady weather patterns, and cleaner air. The lodges are full and everyone is friendly. If you enjoy meeting new friends, want the best chance for great weather, this is the best trekking season.

March, April, and May are the second-best time for going on this trek. The days are getting warmer, the weather is stable. This is the only time of year when you can see EBC full of tents and climbers. It is an amazing sight from Gokyo-Ri, Namche Bazaar, and Kala Patthar. In the lower valleys, you will see the blooming Rhododendrons and the terraced fields turn green with new shoots of vegetables.

From June to August the summer monsoons bring heavy rain. Although some of the most beautiful, warm, blue-skied days occur during this time. There is a rainstorm or snow higher up by the afternoon. You might also face cancellation of flights from and to Lukla. The cancellation might occur for a few days due to which traveling is a little less reliable.

December to February are the coldest months to go on a three passes trek. During these months the days are short and not the trails may be empty. There is often a lot of snow on the ground, especially above Namche Bazaar and getting to EBC can sometimes be very difficult or impossible.

 

How Difficult is Everest Three High Passes Trek?

The Three Passes Trek is harder than the other trek so we recommend you have a good fitness level before going on the trek.

The most difficult part of the trek is trekking in the high passes for a long period of time. You will be walking 6/7 hours per day. Walking for more than 12 days in the same ratio might cause a major difficulty.

The second most difficult part of the trek is reaching the altitude of 5500m. Even though you will not be spending extended periods of time at altitudes above 5,000m. There are always chances of getting altitude sickness. But, the itinerary also has enough acclimatization days. If you follow the guide you should not have a problem.

Tips to Overcome the Difficulty of Everest Three High Passes Trek

  • Walk at a slow pace and do not rush to reach the destination. Walking slowly is the key to complete the trek.
  • Try to avoid alcohol and maintain a high level of non- alcoholic fluid consumption. Alcoholic consumption will only dehydrate your body.
  • Doing physical preparation before the Everest Three High Passes trek will be very helpful.
  • Make sure you engage in physical activities such as swimming, running, cycling, etc three weeks before your trek.
  • Carry some Diamox tablets to prevent the problem of altitude sickness.
  • Do not forget to carry rain gear if you are trekking in monsoon season. You do not have to carry bulky clothes during autumn and spring season
